Introducing HP DeskMon

by Jill Cullyer
Pinewood Information Systems Division

Introducing HP DeskMon, a pro-active monitor for HP DeskManager. HP
DeskMon is a powerful new product which pro-actively monitors the
activity of HP DeskManager.

It is a utility which is designed for use within a network environment.
It can be configured by the System Administrator to monitor the HP
DeskManager network and report exceptions and errors to a central point.

A copy of HP DeskMon is required on each machine the Administrator wishes
to monitor. HP DeskMon runs in the background on each machine,
performing checks on HP DeskManager at preconfigured times.

FEATURES

The following describe the features of HP DeskMon:

 * HP DeskMon has a screen-driven interface with the same "look and
feel" as the HP DeskManager Configuration Interface.

 * HP DeskMon may be configured to monitor:

     * Jobs. HP DeskMon can check that a number of jobs related to HP
DeskManager are running and are in a pre-defined state.

     * Processes. HP DeskMon can check that the Mailroom, for example,
        is running.

     * Queues. HP DeskMon will report when the number of messages on
the mail queues exceeds a pre-defined limit.

     * Datasets. HP DeskMon will report when any of the three major
        datasets exceeds a pre-defined percentage.

     * Inter-Process Communication files. HP DeskMon will report when
any of the IPC files used by HP DeskManager exceeds a pre-defined
        limit.

     * User-written applications. HP DeskMon will check using a
user-written application reporting back any message produced by
        the application.

 * HP DeskMon may be configured to report errors and exceptions:

     * To the console of a local or remote machine.

     * To a local or remote session user.

     * To a local or remote printer.

     * Via a message to an HP DeskManager user.

 * Configuration changes made to one machine in the network may be
duplicated on other machines by means of a batch file which is mailed
to the DeskMon Updaten server on each of the other machines in the
network. Machines may be configured to accept or deny remote
    reconfiguration.

 * The HP DeskMon Configurator interface comes with a comprehensive
    online Help Facility.

 * HP DeskMon documentation is held electronically within the product
and may be printed as often as required.

    network.
