Chapter 6 SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
Introducing NewWave Office
by the NewWave Office Product Team
Data Management Systems Division
NewWave Office is a collection of server and client services bundled
together with the NewWave environment into a total software solution for
the integrated office. The services available are:
* The NewWave environment
* NewWave Document Services
* NewWave Information Services
* NewWave System Services
These Services are provided for both MPE and HP-UX servers. Only the
last two services executing on MPE based servers will be described here.
Also included in this article are details on system requirements.
NEWWAVE INFORMATION SERVICES
NewWave Office has the following NewWave Information services:
* The Information Access Service provides client users with information
from a variety of sources that may reside on the server or client.
This information can be easily loaded into client applications for
analysis.
* The Information Distribution Service provides enterprise-wide
communication of information in a variety of file formats.
NEWWAVE SYSTEM SERVICES
NewWave Office has the following NewWave System services:
* Networked PC Management Service (available for LAN environment only)
automates the installation of NewWave Office software on client PCs
in a LAN environment. This automation also helps ensure that all
clients are using the same versions of application software.
After installing NewWave Office on the server, installation of client PCs
is done in a one to three step process:
1. The Network Setup Utility (NETSETUP) is run to specify which PC
will be added to the LAN and subsequently installed with client
software. A shared disk is assigned to each client. If any of
these shared disks do not already exist, the NETSETUP utility will
automatically create them. NETSETUP also creates flexible disks
for installing the HP NewWave Office software on each client.
These flexible disks contain the HP OfficeShare network configured
for each individual client and the Installation Utilities (NETLOAD
and INSTALL).
2. The flexible disks created by NETSETUP are used to run the NETLOAD
utility which installs HP OfficeShare and its configuration from
the flexible disks to the client's hard disk.
3. The INSTALL utility is run from either the flexible disks created
by NETSETUP or the HP provided PC Utilities Disk. The INSTALL
utility will install client application software from shared disks
on the server to the hard disk on the client. The INSTALL utility
can be used by clients added to the network by NETSETUP or by
clients already on the network. The PC user will choose which
group of software to install on the PC. Applications included with
NewWave Office groups are:

Client software is provided on the PC Software Tape and the Vectra Office
Applications Tape.
Client software can be updated by installing new versions of software on
the server shared disks and running the INSTALL utility on each client.
* The Shared Resource Service (available for LAN environment only)
provides file sharing and printer sharing capabilities. On MPE,
these services include the ability to backup files from the client
hard disk to the HP 3000 tape device.
For XL Release 2.1 (A.40.00), the Shared Resource Service has been
enhanced to increase performance and to consume fewer system resources.
This version of the product will control multiple personal computers
under a common MPE XL session. Past versions of the product used one
session for each client connected to the server. Management of each
connection has been modified through the addition of two new UDC
commands: SHOWPCUSER and ABORTPCUSER. These commands control the display
and termination of current Shared Resource connections.
NOTE The PC Software tape, Vectra Office Applications tape, manuals and
Networked PC Management utilities may arrive at a different time
than the MIT tapes. Do not install the MIT tapes until all
materials have been received.
