COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 2.1
Chapter 1 Introduction
XL Release 2.1 (A.40.00) Overview
by Myrna Allen
Commercial Systems Division
The Commercial Systems XL Release 2.1 (A.40.00) introduces many new
products and contains performance enhancements to existing products.
This commercial release of MPE XL further extends the functionality of
the MPE XL operating system.
SYSTEM PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION
Hewlett-Packard introduces two new high-availability products, Mirrored
Disk/XL and AutoRestart/XL. Mirrored Disk/XL allows you to maintain two
copies of all data residing on a non-system volume set and provides
online disk backup, user transparency, and protection against disk
failures.
AutoRestart/XL is now available on MPE XL. During a system failure, this
new product automatically collects failure information and reboots.
AutoRestart/XL ensures that a dump will be taken by preallocating the
disk file that receives the failure state information.
The BULDACCT utility, introduced with this release, is designed to help
you move your directory accounting structures across volume sets or
systems. This utility can be used successfully with Mirrored Disk/XL to
migrate accounts from the system volume set to a user volume set.
With this release, a Native Mode (NM) spooler replaces the Compatibility
Mode (CM) spooler. Spoolfiles now become recoverable disk files which
are handled by the NM file system. In addition, three new commands
(LISTSPF, SPOOLER, SPOOLF) and two new utilities (SPFXFER and PRINTSFP)
are being introduced to increase the functionality of this new product.
The new HP 700/92A Asian Data Entry Terminal is available in four
language versions. The HP 700/92A supports a wide variety of character
input methods. In addition, this terminal combines the built-in hardware
fonts and the HP User-definable Fonts, provides both block and format
modes, contains bilingual error messages and function keys, and has a
localized keyboard with color-coded Asian legends.
MPE XL now supports the Native Language I/O subsystem (NLIO). NLIO
provides a transparent conversion between internal code in a host system
and external code in peripherals. A new utility, NLIOUTIL, which allows
you to activate native devices dynamically, is also included in this
release.
Native Mode Device Files (NMDF) provides you with a new method for
getting information onto devices.
The Architected Interfaced Facility is a new group of services which
allows easy and high performance access, manipulation, or interception of
Hewlett-Packard proprietary operating information or processes. New
features include: task oriented interface, direct access to internal
functions and data, and shared data space.
MPE XL Command Interpreter (CI) has added Command I/O Redirection (CIOR).
CIOR enables CI to: write the output of a command to a file, redirect
the input of a command to a file, and append the output of a command to a
file.
With this release, the FCOPY subsystem has been changed to support the
Native Mode KSAM (NM KSAM) files.
Native Mode Keyed Sequential Access Method (KSAM) is now supported on MPE
XL. KSAM XL features include: immediate data access, file level locking,
data space reuse option, user interface, and data logging.
System managers now have increased flexibility through scheduling
enhancements added to this release. With these new features, the boost
property and process queue changing, you now have access to new commands
which display process information and change process information.
This new release of the Switch Assist Tool (SWAT) has been enhanced to
include: SWAT script command functionality, the ability to overwrite
existing files, and new function keys.
DATA COMMUNICATIONS
The new HP X.400/3000 provides X.400 message handling for HPDesk.
Features of the HP X.400/3000 include: transmission of both text
messages and binary files using X.400, supportability of up to 200
X.400/HPDesk systems, connectivity between HPDesk and other vendor X.400
electronic mail systems, conformance to 1984 CCITT recommendations, and
increased performance over competitive products.
The new NS/SNA Link/XL product allows HP 3000s to communicate with each
other over an SNA network. NS/SNA Link/XL supports connectivity of
standalone HP 3000 900 Series over an SNA network or an HP 3000 on a LAN
which is connected through an SNA gateway node.
SNA/X.25 Link/XL, used in conjunction with X.25/XL System Access and DTC
X.25 Link Access products, allows SNA Service Products to communicate
with an SNA host over an X.25 network.
With this release, the name of the SNA Link/XL product has been changed
to SNA/SDLC Link/XL, and two new features have been added: Netview
Alerts support, which sends alert messages to the IBM network facility,
and Type 2.1 Node capability.
SNA IMF/XL now processes IBM Double-Byte coded Character Set (DBCS) data
and supports the protocol to recognize the 16-bit Asian characters.
With this release of DTC/Terminal Access, all data communication product
configurations are done through the configuration utility, NMMGR. In
addition you can now customize your terminal/printer type files using the
TTUTIL utility.
Network Transport has been enhanced to support IP subnetting. With IP
subnetting, networks can be configured to support IP subnet addressing.
This new feature allows two or more physically distinct networks to share
the same network number.
New features, including application level security, API Header Item, and
NS/3000 independence, are now available with NetDelivery/XL.
LANGUAGES
Significant changes have been made to the new version of HP Business
BASIC/XL. Enhancements include: a change to the default for GLOBAL
OPTION SUBPROGRAM, addition of the "B" format specifier for the IMAGE
statement, generation of a cross reference for a program that contains
VERIFY errors, and printing of forms in a forms file with '@' option.
RPG/XL now supports the calling of intrinsics from RPG/XL programs
through two new Calculation Spec operators, INTR and IPARM.
HP Symbolic Debugger/XL is enhanced with the following new features: HP
COBOLII/XL support, the addition of datatrace, and the addition of a
command history stack.
Enhancements have been added to HP C/XL which bring it into conformance
with the pending ANSI standard for the C language, X3.159.
DATABASE TOOLS
This new release of HP ALLBASE/QUERY introduces two new modules,
EZCreate, which allows you to create or modify a table, and EXUpdate,
which allows you to modify data in the tables.
ALLBASE/SQL now includes two new features: Data Hashing, another method
of data retrieval, and an Unlimited Data Buffer Pool, in which the number
of Data Buffers can be expanded.
ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
Hewlett-Packard introduces NewWave Office, a collection of server and
client services. NewWave Information services provide Information Access
Service and Information Distribution Service. NewWave System Services
provide Networked PC Management Services and Shared Resources Service.
