COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 2.1
Chapter 3 DATA COMMUNICATIONS
Introducing the HP X.400/3000 Products
by Kelly Nichols
Information Networks Division
The HP X.400/3000 products, HP32055 through HP32058A, provide X.400
standard message handling capability for HPDesk on MPE V/E and XL.
With X.400/3000, HPDesk users have the capability to exchange mail with
users of other vendor's systems that offer X.400 connections.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The HP X.400/3000 products provide X.400 message handling for HPDesk via
an off-board X.400 Server. The X.400 Server is specifically configured
to serve as a processor for handling X.400 message traffic. The X.400
Server is a hardware-software bundle consisting of an HP 9000 Series 330
or greater, related system and network hardware and software, and the
X.400 Server Software. The Server Software may also be purchased
separately.
The X.400 Server connects to the HP X.400/HPDesk node which is the MPE
V/E or XL system running HPDesk and the HP X.400/HPDesk software. The
Server is connected to the HPDesk node by Network Services running over
the Local Area Network (LAN).
HP X.400/3000 actually consists of four products: the X.400/HPDesk
connection software, the MPE V/E or XL node that runs the connection
software, the off-board X.400 Server which is purchased as a bundle, and
the X.400 Server Software which can be purchased separately.
The Server connects the HP X.400/HPDesk node to the external X.400
environment using the HP OSI Transport Services and either X.25 or 802.3.
This X.25 connection can be linked to a public mail service or a private
mail system, and the 802.3 connection can be used in the LAN environment.
The X.400 Server X.25 connection conforms to the 1984 CCITT
specifications for packet switching.
PRODUCT FEATURES
X.400/3000 provides the following features:
* The HP X.400/3000 products allow users to transmit both text messages
and binary files using X.400 over X.25 and 802.3.
* One X.400 Server may support up to 200 X.400/HPDesk systems (both V/E
and XL) and adjacent Message Transfer Agents (MTA).
* X.400/3000 provides connectivity between HPDesk and other vendor's
X.400 electronic mail systems.
* X.400/3000 is based on the 1984 CCITT recommendations.
* By using the X.400 Server, HP X.400/3000 performs better than the
competitive products. Performance for an HP 9000 Series 360 Server
is up to 1000 2k messages per hour.
X.400/3000 REPLACES HP OFFICECONNECT TO X.400
The HP X.400/3000 product on MPE V/E replaces the HP OfficeConnect to
X.400/V product (A Limited Distribution Product with HP30257A) and
includes the following enhancements:
* Multiple HPDesk Connections: the X.400 Server will allow multiple
HPDesk nodes, both MPE V/E and XL, to communicate to a single Server
over an 802.3 LAN.
* Server Access from an HP 3000 System: the X.400/HPDesk software on
the MPE system now allows an HPDesk administrator to monitor the
X.400 Server directly from the HP 3000.
* Better Performance: performance for a single X.400 Server (HP 9000
Series 360) is up to 1000 2k messages per hour.
* A new user interface on the X.400 Server: allows you to perform
daily operations on the Server without prior knowledge of HP-UX.
* Additional troubleshooting and maintenance tools.
X.400/3000 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
X.400/3000 consists of four products: the X.400/HPDesk software for the
MPE V/E or XL node that runs the connection software, and the X.400
Server and Server Software.
* The X.400/HP Desk node is released on XL Release 2.1 or MPE V/E
V-Delta-9.
* The X.400/HPDesk software requires HP DeskManager/XL or V/E with a
version later than B.03.B0, and NS 3000.
* The X.400 Server bundle provides an HP 9000 Series 360. If the X.400
Server Software is purchased unbundled, it must run on an HP 9000
Series 330 or greater.
* The X.400 Server Software requires HP-UX version 7.0, OSI Transport
Services Software, NS-Arpa Services and the 802.3 LAN Link Software.
X.25 Software is optional.
* X.400/3000 is a new product on the XL system. On the MPE V/E system,
an upgrade from the OfficeConnect to X.400/V product is provided.
