The Documentation Set
In addition to this Reference, a number of other books are provided with
this COBOL System. A complete discussion on the composition of the
documentation provided with this system is contained in the Getting
Started book; however, a summary of this information is provided here:
* Getting Started
The Getting Started book contains an introduction to the system
components and provides directions for installing the software.
It also explains the development process to follow in producing a
program or application using this system. It is recommended that
you read this book first.
* COBOL User Guide
The COBOL User Guide is designed to be used in conjunction with
this manual. It describes the COBOL development cycle and
creation of linked applications. It includes examples on the
actual use of components, such as the Compiler and Linker, and
tips to help you to make optimum use of this system. Animator,
library routines, switches and efficiency are also covered. You
may wish to familiarize yourself with this book after reading the
Getting Started book.
Once you are familiar with the overall working of this COBOL system as
described in the Getting Started and the COBOL User Guide, you will be
able to refer to this COBOL System Reference for specific details on
components.
Figure 1-1 summarizes where each component is documentedto help you to
quickly determine where to look for information on a topic.
