Setting Performance Expectations

Once you have clicked OK on the Forecasts command dialog box, HP
RXForecast works relatively quickly to gather the necessary information
and compute and display the forecast. Just how long it takes depends on
the forecasting options you have chosen, what kind of logfile you are
accessing, and where the logfile resides.

The list below offers some rough guidelines:

   * It is generally faster to draw a forecast of global, rather than
       application, data.

It takes about 15 to 40 seconds to display a global forecast,
depending on whether the logfile is local or remote and, if it is
remote, whether you have a serial or LAN connection to the host.
It can take almost twice as long to display an application
       forecast in the same configuration.

   * It is generally faster to access data on the host (remote
logfiles) than on the PC (local logfiles).

The time differences are generally negligible--a matter of a few
seconds--except for application graphs, which can be significantly
slower to draw from a local logfile.

   * It is generally faster to access remote logfiles over a LAN rather
       than a serial connection.

Forecasts drawn from logfiles accessed over a LAN connection are
displayed faster than those accessed over a serial connection.
The difference, however, is usually negligible.

   * It is generally faster to forecast from an extracted logfile
(hourly summaries) than from raw logfiles (5-minute summaries).

Forecasting from raw logfiles is unnecessary and, therefore,
       needlessly time-consuming.

   * It is generally faster to access a local logfile from the PC's
hard disk than from the CD-ROM.

A forecast drawn from a logfile on the PC's hard disk will
typically take anywhere from 15 to 40 seconds to display. It can
take six to eight times as long from the CD-ROM.

In summary, it is faster to access a remote logfile than a local one
(over a LAN, rather than a serial, connection), an extracted logfile
rather than a raw one, and global rather than application data.
