HP Resource Sharing for MPE/iX

Resource Manager Functions

RESMGR has five functional areas that let you set up and control HP
Resource Sharing operations. You perform RESMGR functions in the MPE
account to which you are logged on. RESMGR authorizes functions based on
your HP 3000 capability:

   * Users with basic capabilities (IA, BA, ND, SF) can perform all
basic RESMGR tasks within their group and account. Basic
capabilities are those which do not include Account Manager (AM),
System Manager (SM) or Node Manager (NM) capabilities.

   * Users with Account Manager (AM) capability can do all basic tasks
for all groups in the account for which they are responsible.

   * Users with System Manager (SM) or Node Manager (NM) capability can
do all basic tasks system-wide, as well as Configuration and
System tasks. Most users with SM or NM capability also have AM
capability, so will be able to create and delete discs for all
       groups in an account.

The function map below shows the five RESMGR functional areas, and the
discussion that follows briefly explains each area.

Figure 8-3. RESMGR Functions Disc Functions Disc functions let you create shared discs on the HP 3000. Creating a shared disc for Resource Sharing builds a root directory on the HP 3000 with a file name of VDROOT. Once Resource Sharing is set up, you'll use Disc functions to delete unused discs, and to back up and recover files from your shared discs. Users can perform Disc functions at these levels, based on MPE capabilities: * Basic users with Save Files (SF) capability can perform all Disc functions within the current logon group. * Users with Account Manager (AM) capability can perform all Disc functions for all groups in the logon account. * Users with System Manager (SM) capabilities can back up and recover files system-wide. However, users with SM capability cannot create and delete shared discs system-wide; they must be logged onto the account in which they want to create or delete shared discs. Share Functions Share functions let you control access to the shared discs. You can share discs with other users on the network, allowing them to access the data stored there. You can also use the Share function to examine share information, and to deactivate shares. Users can perform Share functions at these levels, based on MPE capabilities: * All users with basic capabilities (IA, BA, ND, SF) can control shares within the current logon group. * Users with Account Manager (AM) capability can control shares for all groups in the logon account. * Users with System Manager (SM) or Node Manager (NM) capability can control shares for all groups in all accounts. The SM or NM user can also share configured printers. Configuration Functions Configuration functions are available only to users with SM or NM capability. If the user does not have SM or NM capability, the Config f3 function label doesn't display, and an attempt to enter the CONFIG command produces an error. Configuration lets SM and NM users define the parameters of shared disc use on the system, for example, the number of shared files, number of locked files, and number of active connections. System Functions System functions, like Configuration functions, are available only to users with SM or NM capability. The System functions let you control the system's shared disc environment. With System functions you can release the Resource Sharing tables back to the system (which enables any changes you made to RESMGR configuration), delete the configuration file, or delete the share file. Diagnostics Functions Diagnostics, like Configuration and System functions, are available only to users with SM or NM capability. This function lets you run two of the Resource Sharing host diagnostics directly from RESMGR, instead of leaving RESMGR to run various Diagnostic programs. The diagnostics you can perform in RESMGR are Go/No Go and Version Check (Verification Test). These diagnostics are explained in greater detail in Chapter 10, "Advanced Resource Manager Functions." The diagnostics you can run separately from RESMGR include similar tests, but are executed in full screen mode. Refer to Chapter 7, "Diagnostics," for a full explanation of these diagnostic tests.
