Introduction
HP Resource Sharing gives PC users access to the power and flexibility of
the HP 3000 and its peripherals.
Together with HP LAN Manager Client, Resource Sharing links PC users to
the HP 3000 over a local area network (LAN), allowing them to share and
save files on the HP 3000, print documents on HP 3000 printers, and back
up files to tape. The figure below shows a sample network configuration.
Resource Sharing includes Resource Manager (RESMGR) and Disc Manager
(DISCMGR) utilities and additional functions that significantly increase
PC users' efficiency.
Resource Manager Utility (RESMGR)
RESMGR lets you create and manage shared disc space and shared printing
on the HP 3000. RESMGR also provides:
* Expanded file space - You can create shareable discs on the HP
3000 server to act as extensions of PC discs.
* File sharing - Data is available in a central location, so you
don't need to make copies of identical files for each PC.
* Print sharing (see following sections)
* Backup and recovery (see following sections)
Disc Manager Utility (DISCMGR)
This utility provides easy access to shared discs files for MPE jobs and
terminal sessions. DISCMGR includes:
* File conversion - You can convert files from DOS format to MPE
format for access by HP 3000-based applications, and from MPE to
DOS for PC-based applications.
* File copy - You can copy and manage HP 3000 shared disc files and
subdirectories.
* Batch access - DISCMGR can be executed from job streams.
Printing
Printing capabilities include:
* Printer access - PC users can use the HP 3000 server's configured
print devices.
* Print status - The user can find out the status of files that have
been directed to a shared print device.
* Print formatting - The user can use environment files and
formatters for specialized printing.
Backup and Recovery
Backup of all shared discs takes place during regular HP 3000 backup
procedures, since shared disc files reside on the HP 3000. You can use
the Resource Manager Utility (RESMGR) to select individual shared disc
files for backup if necessary. Backup is done to a tape drive on the HP
3000.
Using RESMGR, shared disc files can be recovered from either system
backup tapes or from tapes created with RESMGR.
