Information Access Server: Learning the Administrator Utility

A : Ground Rules for Changes

There are two things you should consider before modifying the Access
Server configuration:

   * What kind of information you are changing (that dictates the
       procedure and order to follow)
   *   The current configuration

Kinds of information (and procedures) Two kinds of Administrator Utility
information can be modified: "key" and "attribute" information. "Key
information" is used by Access Server to maintain the association between
groups and users, databases and tables, and so on. "Attribute
information" includes descriptions of capabilities, security, and so on.

   * To change key information, you first delete the old information
and then add new information at the Administrator Utility's Delete
and Add screens. For example, if you want to change the name of a
user, you must first delete, then re-add, the user definition.

   * To change attribute information, you use the Administrator
Utility's Change screens. For example, you change the items
and/or records included in a table at the Change Table screen.
You change the capability of an access group at the Change Access
Group screen. The order in which you change information is not
important since the key information remains unchanged.

This lesson deals with the second type, changes to attribute information.

Current Configuration It is important to know what's currently
configured before you attempt any changes.

You can, of course, go directly to the Change screen. The display
includes not only the fields you are allowed to change, but also key
information that identifies the entity you are changing. This approach
works as long as you can remember what's configured. When lots of
databases, tables, access groups, and users are defined, this may become
difficult.

The Administrator Utility lets you examine the current configuration at
the List and Show screens, described below.
