ISO-7 to ROMAN-8 Mapping
Mapping from an ISO-7 machine to a ROMAN-8 machine usually maps a
character to itself. The exceptions are the twelve standard characters
shown in Figure D-2 and the loss of certain accents in the mute character
sets.
Standard Mappings
Twelve standard decimal values map to the characters shown in the
following figure. That is, the decimal value shown in the From: line
maps to the character whose symbol is shown next to the name of the
language (and whose ROMAN-8 decimal representation is as shown under the
symbol).
These mappings are based on the 262X set of ISO-7 terminals.
Figure D-2. Characters Represented by Specific Decimal Values
For example, a character whose decimal value is 35 will be interpreted by
an ISO-7 French terminal as a "British Pound Sign" (which has a ROMAN-8
decimal value of 187). The same character in ITALIANA maps to the
"Italian Lira Sign" (which has a decimal value of 175).
NOTE As the "Opening Single Quote" and the "Closing Single Quote" are
two of these special characters, you'll want to use "Double Quotes"
instead around text strings if your character set is SVENSK/SUOMI,
ESPANOL MUTE, or ITALIANA.
Mute Exception
If your character set is a mute language (FRANCAIS MUTE or ESPANOL MUTE),
be aware of the following special case:
Whenever one accented character is represented in ISO-7 as a pair of
characters, the mapping to ROMAN-8 will be correct. For example, a maps
correctly to "Lowercase a Circumflex."
However, on the reverse mapping (ROMAN-8 to ISO-7), the accented
character loses its accent. For example, "Lowercase a Circumflex" maps
to "Lowercase a".
Specifically, the characters affected are these:
* In FRANCAIS MUTE, the "Caret" followed by "Lowercase a", "e", "i",
"o", or "u"; the "Umlaut" followed by "Lowercase a", "e", "i",
"o", or "u"; and the "Umlaut" followed by "Uppercase A", "O", or
"U".
* In ESPANOL MUTE, the "Tilde" followed by "Lowercase a", "e", "i",
"o", or "u".
