Table Menu (continued)
Examining Table Definitions
Examine information about tables at the Show Table (ST) screen and from
the List Tables Menu (LT).
These screens provide two different ways to examine the definitions of
remote systems currently defined in the data dictionary:
* Display the definition of a specific table (Show), or
* Display a list of all configured tables, all view tables, all
IMAGE tables, or all file tables (List)
Whether you Show or List depends on why you are referencing the
information.
DBA Capabilities.
If you are a secondary DBA, you can only display a table definition that
you control. When you list tables definitions, only the ones you control
are displayed.
Showing a Table Definition
Ordinarily in the Administrator Utility, choosing the Show function takes
you to a single screen format. However, since there are four types of
tables, the Show function for tables displays the appropriate format for
the specified table. A new screen title confirms the type of table:
Show View Table, Show IMAGE Table, or Show File Table.
In addition, you can examine the specific items in any type of table by
choosing the Show Items f4 function label, which displays the Show Items
screen.
Here's what you'll see at each of the Show screens.

To Show a Particular Table Definition:.
1. Go to the Show Table screen by typing ST in the Go to screen field
of any menu, or by choosing Show One Table f4 at the Table Menu.
2. Type in the table name and press Enter.
One of the Show screens pictured above appears, depending on the
type of the specified table.
The current table definition is displayed, as defined in the data
dictionary.
3. If you want a printout of the complete table definition, choose
Print f1.
This sends a copy to the file ADMLIST, which prints to the default
or other specified printer.
4. If you want to see the characteristics of the data items in the
table, choose the Show Items f4 function label at the first group
of table fields.
The Show Items screen lists each Item and its associated Type
(data type), Start (beginning offset, for file tables only), Len
(length), Sub (number of sub-items, for IMAGE and view tables
only), Conv (conversion type), and Decimal or Dec (digits after
decimal point). (For explanations of each column on this screen,
see "Show Item Characteristics," below.)
To return to the previous Show screen, choose Done f8.
5. To see the definition of another table, choose Done f8 to return
to the Show Table screen, type in a new table name, and press
Enter.
6. To leave this function, choose Done f8 at the Show Table screen.
This returns you to the Table Menu. From there, you can go to
another screen or exit the utility.
Show Item Characteristics.
IMAGE Tables and View Tables.
You can examine the characteristics of the data items in any configured
IMAGE table or view table at the Show Items screen. This screen can be
reached by function label from the Show View Table and Show IMAGE Table
screens. (See "To Show...", above.)

Listing Tables
Ordinarily in the Administrator Utility, choosing the List function takes
you directly to the displayed listing. However, the List function for
tables takes you first to an intervening menu, the List Tables Menu (LT).
Here you can choose to display all configured tables or a subset by type
of table.
To specify which type of table list to display:
* Go directly to the screen you want by typing its screen name in
the Go to screen field of any menu and pressing Enter, or
* Choose a function label at the List Tables Menu (LT).
The List Tables Menu looks like this.

To List All Currently Defined Tables:.
1. Go to any of the List screens by typing its name in the Go to
screen field of any menu, or by stepping through two menus:
choose List All Tables f5 at the Table Menu and then the
appropriate function label at the List Tables Menu.
To reach the List All Tables screen, type LAT or choose
All Tables f1 at the List Tables Menu (LT).
To reach the List View Tables screen, type LVT or choose
View Tables f2 at the List Tables Menu (LT).
To reach the List IMAGE Tables screen, type LIMT or choose
IMAGE Tables f3 at the List Tables Menu (LT).
To reach the List File Tables screen, type LFT or choose
File Tables f5 at the List Tables Menu (LT).
An alphabetically sorted list of the names of all tables (or the
specified subset of tables) in the data dictionary is displayed
automatically. In the list of all tables, each table's type is
also listed.
If no tables of the type specified are defined, a message appears
to that effect.
2. If you want a printout of the complete listing, choose Print f1.
This sends a copy of the complete list to the file ADMLIST, which
prints to the default or other specified printer.
3. To leave this screen, choose Done f8. This returns you to the
List Tables Menu. From there, you can go to another screen or
exit the utility.
For more information about a particular table listed, go to the Show
Table (ST) screen. (See "To Show...", above.)
Copying or Renaming a Table Definition
Copy the definition of a view, IMAGE, or file table at the Copy Table
(COT) screen, shown below.
Renaming a table copies it under a new name and deletes the original
table, an option available at the Copy Table (COT) screen.
The new table you create at this screen has the same table security and
item security as the old table.
Table 5-6 describes the fields in the Copy Table screen.

If you are a secondary DBA, you can only copy or rename a table
definition that you control.

Table 5-6. Copy Table Screen Fields
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Field | Description |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| From Table | Name of the currently defined view table, IMAGE table, or file table |
| | that you want to copy or rename. |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| To New Table | Name you want the duplicate configured table to have. |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Option | Copy the table by leaving the default value of 1 in this field. This |
| | option keeps both the old and new table definitions, under different |
| | names. |
| | |
| | Rename the table by replacing the 1 with a 2. This option deletes |
| | the old table definition after the new table definition (with a new |
| | name) is successfully added to the data dictionary. |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE Access Server will not let you rename (delete) a configured table
that is named in the Using Clause of a view table definition.
However, there is a way to rename such a table. (See "To Rename a
Table from which a View Table is Derived:", below.)
To Copy or Rename a Table:.
1. Go to the Copy Table screen by typing COT in the Go to screen
field of any menu, or by choosing Copy Table f6 at the Table
Menu.
2. Type the names of the old and new tables (must be different).
To make a duplicate table, leave the default of 1 in the Option
field.
To rename the old table, replace the 1 in the Option field with a
2.
3. To begin the copy or rename operation, press Enter.
A new table definition is created, exactly like the old one except
that it has a different name.
If you chose to rename the table, the old table is deleted.
4. When the screen clears, you can copy or rename another table
definition.
5. To leave this screen, choose Done f8. This returns you to the
Table Menu. From there, you can go to another screen or exit the
utility.
To Rename a Table from which a View Table is Derived:.
If a table is named in the Using Clause of a view table definition, the
rename operation described above will not work. This is because Access
Server will not allow you to delete such a table.
Instead, follow these steps:
1. Use the Copy Table (COT) screen (Steps 1 through 5, above) to
duplicate the OLDTABLE as NEWTABLE by leaving the default of 1 in
the Option field.
2. Go to the Change Table screen by typing CT in the Go to screen
field on the Table Menu. Type the view table name, and press
Enter. At the Change View Table screen, change all OLDTABLE
references in the Item Clause, Using Clause, and Sort Clause (if
applicable) to NEWTABLE. (See "To Change a View Table:" under
"Change," above.) Do this for every view table definition that
names the OLDTABLE in the Using Clause.
3. Go to the Delete Table screen by typing DT in the Go to screen
field on the Table Menu. Delete OLDTABLE. (See "Delete," above.)
This procedure effectively renames the table as well as all dependent
references to it.
