Setting Up and Maintaining Your System The Installation Guide

Creating the Best Computer Environment

The HP 3000/9X7LX computer is a sensitive piece of electronic equipment.
For optimum system performance and reliability, read and follow the
suggestions listed below:

Do these things

   1. Have enough grounded electrical outlets for the equipment that you
have ordered with the computer system (for example, 1 for the
computer; 1 for the console; and 1 for each external disk cabinet
       or printer).

The power cord is the AC disconnect method for the computer. The
       AC outlet must be accessible.

   2. Allow at least 12 inches of ventilation space behind the computer.
(This is where the cooling fan is located.)

   3. Have a desk or table close to the computer for the console and the
       keyboard.

   4. Provide a storage cabinet for computer supplies such as tapes and
       printer supplies.

   5. Provide dedicated telephone outlets close to the computer for
possible data communication with a modem and for normal telephone
       use.

   6. Be sure that the computer location is well ventilated and has
       adequate lighting.

   7. Be sure to route cables so that they are not in traffic areas
where they can cause injury or they can be kicked loose.

   8. Plan installation of the printer, terminals, and disks to account
for length of the cables involved.

Don't do these things

   1. Do not use an extension cord or multiple outlet power strips to
provide electrical power to the computer or computer equipment.

   2. Do not install the computer under a desk or table. This could
       cause a ventilation problem.

   3. Do not install the computer next to open windows, where you cannot
       control environmental conditions.

   4. Do not install the computer near doorways where heavy traffic is
       likely.

   5. Do not plug the computer or computer peripherals into outlets that
are controlled by a switch. If the outlets are controlled by a
switch, cover or protect the switch from someone turning it off
       accidentally.

   6. Do not plug non-office type equipment into the same outlet with
the computer. This would include things such as coffee pots,
       heaters, fans, radios, or TVs.

   7. Do not block the front or rear computer vent openings.

   8. Do not remove any panels or covers on the computer.

   9. Do not use the computer cabinet as a storage surface or resting
       place for anything.

CAUTION If the environmental equipment (air conditioners, humidifiers, or heaters) for the office computer site stop functioning, stop all computer applications. Perform a shutdown, and turn the computer and all external computer equipment off. Proceed only when the problem is corrected and normal operation is restored. This safety step protects data contained in the computer and the hardware reliability of the computer. See "Performing Tasks Using MPE/iX Commands" in the Using Your System binder.
