Configuring Peripheral Devices
Enable/disable coverage on physical devices (PDEVs) through the
Peripheral Devices menu, which can be reached from the Main Menu or from
the Configuration Options menu.
* From the Main Menu: Type 4 3 or configure peripheral.
* From the Configuration Options Menu: Type 3 or peripheral.
This displays the Configure Peripheral Devices Menu:

The Configure Peripheral Devices Menu differs from most other
configuration menus in the following respects:
* It may be multi-paged, if the system has more than 12 peripheral
devices. (Only 12 peripheral devices are listed at a time. If
there are more devices to list, psconfig prompts you to press
Return to display these devices.)
* There are multiple data fields for each PDEV. If you are enabling
coverage on a PDEV (physical device), psconfig also prompts you
for the serial and model numbers.
* The item keys on this menu are the PDEV numbers (for example,
4.1.0).
Enabling/Disabling Devices
When you enter psconfig, it checks the current configuration of the
system for any changes since the last time it was run. For example, a
device may have been physically added but not yet configured in psconfig.
If a coverable but unconfigured device is detected during this check,
psconfig places you into required fields mode. In required fields mode,
psconfig prompts you to enable or disable coverage for each PDEV that is
not yet configured, one PDEV at a time.
Some devices have multiple internal mechanisms. These devices may have a
different IO path (PDEV) for each mechanism but a single interface
connection and a single serial number sticker. In the peripheral devices
portion of required fields mode, enter the same serial number for each
PDEV that specifies the IO path of a mechanism for that device.
The following are examples of devices with multiple mechanisms for each
device interface protocol:
HP7963B (CS80) This device has a single CS80 connector with the
possibility of multliple PDEVs.
HPC2213B (SCSI) These devices can have combinations of mechanisms
with a PDEV for each internal device. For
instance, a single device may have two disk drives
and a DDS tape drive, or two CD-ROM drives and two
disk drives.
HPC225X (ALINK) These disk array devices can be set up to have a
single PDEV that covers all of its mechanisms, or
a PDEV for each of its mechanisms.
Once you complete required fields mode, psconfig takes you to its Main
Menu.
You can exit required fields mode by typing // at any prompt with double
slashes. However, if you do so, psconfig:
* Issues a warning that HP Predictive Support does not cover an
unconfigured device.
* Returns you to the MPE prompt.
You cannot access the psconfig menus until the new PDEV is configured.
Therefore, configuration of newly added devices is "automatically" taken
care of through required fields mode.
NOTE If you physically add a device to the system, do not configure
coverage on that device until after you have updated SYSGEN and the
system has been restarted.
psconfig uses SYSGEN to identify coverable devices that are not yet
configured. If psconfig is updated before SYSGEN is updated and
before the system is restarted, any coverage changes entered into
psconfig will be voided.
Swapping Devices
Swapping devices is the process of exchanging the physical ports of two
similar devices and is done under certain maintenance conditions. When
the ports for the similar devices are exchanged, the new configuration
information must be entered through psconfig.
To swap devices:
1. Type 0 (zero) at the prompt and press Return.
2. Type the number of the first PDEV in the swap and press Return.
3. Type the number of the second PDEV in the swap and press Return.
NOTE
1. Reset event data when you replace an old device with a new
one of the same model onto the same PDEV.
2. When you swap devices, psconfig erases the history for the
two devices, but swaps the configuration information.
3. To get a report of the current peripheral device information
in psconfig, print the "Configuration Report" through the
psconfig Print Reports Menu (see Chapter 6, "HP Predictive
Support Reports").
