Chapter 1 A Journey of Discovery This document takes you on a journey--a journey of discovery using the HP LaserRX/MPE performance analysis tool. Your PC will be your vehicle. Once HP LaserRX/MPE is installed and functional, you will travel through sample logfiles supplied with the program on the HP LaserRX/MPE compact disc (CD). Later, you can look at logfiles collected from your own system. This guided tour will give you experience using HP LaserRX/MPE. More importantly, it will lead you through an analysis of real data--the logfiles on the CD are extracted from an existing operating system. This experience will teach you techniques you can use to analyze your own systems. Some of the conclusions reached in this analysis might seem obvious, depending on how well you understand HP 3000 system performance. However, you should follow this guide at least through your first system analysis. This will help you develop good strategies for analyzing your own systems using HP LaserRX's hierarchical data structures.
Important Follow the itinerary and avoid side trips through the data. Although a side trip may be tempting, it can distract you from developing the train of thought you need for performance analysis. Besides, the area that tempts you might be covered later in the journey.
Don't judge HP LaserRX/MPE's performance by its speed in accessing logfiles on the HP LaserRX/MPE CD. It takes more time to access a logfile on the CD than it takes to access the same file on a PC's hard disc. If you want to see typical performance (and you have enough space on your hard disc), copy the logfile from the CD to your PC's hard disc and access it there.
