HP TELNET/iX Client Users Guide
ARPA Services
The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) services are a subset of the
networking services originally developed by the University of California
at Berkeley. The ARPA services have become a de facto standard for
multivendor network communication.
The Telecommunications Network Protocol (TELNET) and File Transfer
Protocol (FTP) are provided as part of the MPE/iX ARPA services which
enable users to communicate with HP and non-HP systems. Refer to HP ARPA
File Transfer Protocol User's Guide (36957-61002) and Installing and
Managing HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol Network Manager's Guide
(36957-61001) for more information on FTP.
TELNET
The TELNET protocol provides the ARPA standard virtual terminal
connection between the HP 9000 and other HP and non-HP systems. MPE/iX
TELNET connections can be made using one of two solutions: 1) via a
direct HP 3000 implementation called "TELNET/iX Client" outbound TELNET
which enables users on an HP 3000 to have direct access to an HP 9000 and
non-HP systems, and 2) via a Datacommunications and Terminal Controller
(DTC) with a TELNET Access Card (herein referred to as "DTC TELNET
Access") which provides inbound TELNET access to an HP 3000 through a
DTC.
A brief description follows for each TELNET implementation. The
remainder of this manual addresses the TELNET/iX Client solution only.
For more information on the "DTC TELNET Access" implementation, see Using
HP OpenView DTC Manager (D2355-90001) and the DTC Planning Guide
(D2355-95017) (note that this solution may be referred to as "TELNET
Access" in these manuals).
