Installing Abbreviations
Installing Abbreviations
An abbreviation must be installed on the system for specific capability
groups using the INSTALL command. Any abbreviation can optionally be
installed to appear in a user's Applications Area. Users can then browse
the list of abbreviations and their descriptions to see what special
commands are available to them in HP Desk.
Each user sees only the abbreviations installed for the capability groups
of which they are a member. It's usually not worth installing
abbreviations to appear in the Applications Area when they are for
commands users know about, or that are simple abbreviations.
To install an abbreviation you must be the System Administrator or a user
with script installation capability. Like other installed items,
abbreviations can be deleted by the REMOVE command and listed by the
SYSTEMLIST or SYSTEMLIST ABBREV command. The use of these commands is
described in HP DeskManager Administration. Note that all of the
Hewlett-Packard-installed abbreviations also get listed by SYSTEMLIST.
Access to abbreviations can be restricted to certain security groups, for
example:
Workarea> INSTALL ABBREV
Enter the name of the abbreviation> LF
Enter the expansion> :LISTF,2
Is this abbreviation to be an application? (No)> YES
Enter a description> The MPE LISTF command
Enter the group names who may access this new command:
(Type // to terminate the list)
Group: MARKETING
Group: PERSONNEL
Group: //
Abbreviation LF installed
If the abbreviation is to be an application (that is, it is to be listed
in the Applications Area) then the line that asks for a description is
used, otherwise it is ignored.
All of the abbreviations are installed into the group MAILXEQ.HPOFFICE as
privileged files with a "C" prefix. Note that if you already have a
script file installed, and you try to install an abbreviation with the
same name, then HP Desk will not allow the installation.
Removing Abbreviations
Removing the abbreviation is equally as straightforward:
Workarea> REMOVE ABBREV
Enter the name of the command to remove> LF
LF is an abbreviation
Do you wish to remove it? (No)> YES
Abbreviation removed
Reading Installed Abbreviations
To read an installed abbreviation (either one installed by you or by
Hewlett-Packard) you must be in the Applications Area and be a member of
the capability groups for which it was installed. Simply type in the
name of the abbreviation, for example:
Applications> READ "FILEAWAY"
System abbreviation: "FILEAWAY"
Expansion: MOVE IT TO "ACCOUNTS" OF "INCOMING"
Group Settings:
Everyone
