HP DeskManager Administration
Maintenance Procedures
A number of maintenance tasks must be performed regularly to ensure that
your HP Desk system runs effectively. In particular it is necessary to
ensure that space occupied by deleted items is reclaimed from the
database, so that it does not fill up. It is also necessary to check the
integrity of the databases and of a number of other files regularly.
For standard HP Desk users, the HP Desk maintenance job (MAILMAINT) is
provided for this purpose. This is described in detail in the following
sections, but in summary this checks and rebuilding of a number of files,
will if required store off the databases and associated files to tape,
performs garbage collection and some database integrity checks, and
finally produces a series of status reports.
Mailmaint needs to be run on a daily basis on standard HP Desk systems.
Users of HP DeskManagerPLUS have the option to use the fully concurrent
garbage collection mechanism in conjunction with the MAILMAINT job. This
mechanism can replace the garbage collection in Mailmaint, typically the
most time consuming phase. This also means that Mailmaint may be run
significantly less frequently, reducing system downtime.
The fully concurrent garbage collection mechanism comprises:
Waste Bin Emptier program run at discreet times, preferably at the
end of each day, to release the contents
of users' Waste Baskets for deletion
Garbage Collector (or runs continuously with the rest of the
"Shredder") program system to physically remove unwanted
items in the database, including users'
Waste Baskets released by the Bin
Emptier.
It is recommended that the MAILMAINT job is run no less than once a week
on HP DeskManagerPLUS systems, if it is used in conjunction with the
Waste Bin Emptier and Garbage Collector. Since these programs now
perform the garbage collection function, this phase of the Mailmaint
processing can be switched out, which typically reduces the time to
complete processing to about one third or less.
NOTE HP DeskManagerPLUS users may still use Mailmaint to perform all the
functions described above. In fact, when HP DeskManagerPLUS is
first installed, by default Mailmaint will be configured by default
to perform garbage collection, and the Garbage Collector will be
configured to be permanently inactive. The Administrator must
therefore take a conscious action to enable the garbage collection.
