HP DeskManager Administration
Mailedit
Use Mailedit to produce data files for input to the Batch Configurator
option of the Mailutil utility. It is an easy method of creating these
Batch Configuration files without using a text editor.
Read Chapter 13 before using Mailedit for the first time.
Running Mailedit
Mailedit is a menu driven program that looks similar to the HP Desk
Configurator. Many of the screens are equivalents of the Configurator
screens. Mailedit does not update the databases directly, but writes the
configuration operations to a file, which you later use to perform a
batch configuration.
Only batch configuration operations can be recorded by Mailedit. You can
add, delete, modify, purge, or rename elements of the database.
NOTE Do not use Mailedit to perform:
* Purge sublocation
* Rename sublocation
* Purge computer/gateway
* Purge hierarchic addressing
In addition, Mailedit does not provide facilities to produce the
following Batch transaction types:
* Modify Local System Data (05nn)
* Transaction application filter (06)
* Modify Local User details (44nn)
* Modify computer details (53nn)
These Batch Configuration file formats are described in Chapter 14
.
As you complete screens to record operations, Mailedit builds up a batch
configuration file which exactly resembles in format that which you might
create yourself using the format in Chapter 14 . So, for instance,
adding a location by typing the location code, country code, and name at
the Location Information screen, writes the following record to the file:
21UK MANF2 Liverpool Manufacturing
You must perform operations in the order in which they are to be applied
to the database during batch configuration. The operations would be in
the same order when you would manually create a batch configuration file
using a text editor. Therefore, a new country must be added before any
new locations for that country.
Since Mailedit doesn't reference the existing HP Desk database, your
entries are only checked for syntax - not for context. (If you write a
record to add a location, Mailedit doesn't know whether the country
specified for this location exists or not.) Any errors are only reported
when you run the file through the Batch Configurator. For this reason,
it is usually advisable to read and edit your newly created file, using
one of Hewlett-Packard's text editors, such as EDIT/3000. (Remember to
keep the file unnumbered.)
To obtain a printed copy of a batch configuration file created by
Mailedit, use a text editor to print it.

How to run Mailedit:

1. To run the utility, type MAILEDIT.

2. The Main Menu is displayed.

Supply a name for the file in which you want the batch
configuration operations recorded, and press the appropriate
function key. This can either be a name for a new file that
you are about to define, or the name of an existing file which
you wish to add to.

3. The Configuration Main Menu is displayed.

From this point on, Mailedit is similar to the HP Desk
Configurator. Work through the menus until you reach the
information screen you require, and there complete all the
fields that you want to define.

The entries you make in individual fields must be in the
formats given for the corresponding fields in the HP
Desk Configurator. These are described in Chapter 12
.

If you're modifying data, remember to complete fields for all
the existing defined parameters, not just the one(s) you want
to modify.

Each time you press a function key to register a change,
Mailedit writes the corresponding operation to the file you
first named.

Mailedit Options
At most information screens, the following function keys are available:
* f1 returns you to the previous menu, or screen.
* Add f2 writes a record to the file that will add the information
in the fields of the screen to the database.
* Delete f3 writes a record to the file that will delete the
information in the fields of the screen from the database.
* Refresh Screen f4 redisplays the current screen if it becomes
corrupted.
* Modify f5 writes a record to the file that will modify an
existing item in the database according to the information in the
fields of the screen. If you leave a field blank, the
corresponding information in the database element will become an
empty string.
