Converting to Hierarchical Addressing

If a location within your network changes from mailnode addressing to
hierarchical addressing, it is necessary to make certain changes to the
HP Desk databases in the network.

* At the computer on which the location resides, the HP Desk
Administrator needs to:

* Add the location to the list of hierarchically addressable
locations and indicate whether or not the computer is the
NRC for that location. Both of these changes are made in
the Hierarchically Addressed Locations screen in the
Configurator. See Chapter 12 for details.

* List all of the users on this location to a file, complete
with their mailnode addresses, and pass it on to the NRC(s)
for that location. This can be done by using Mailutil to
produce the list of users and mailnodes which is sent to
the NRCs via the Directory Update facility.

* At the computer which acts as the NRC for the location, the HP
Desk Administrator needs to:

* Add the location to the list of hierarchically addressable
locations and indicate that the computer is the NRC for the
location. Both of these changes are made in the
Hierarchically Addressed Locations screen in the
Configurator. See Chapter 12 for further details.

* Ensure that the list of users at that location, complete
with their mailnode addresses is held on the NRC's Global
Database. The list can be sent from the location's local
computer as a remote update.

* At any computer in the network which is remote from the location
but is not a NRC, the HP Desk Administrator needs to:

* Add the location to the list of hierarchically addressable
locations and indicate that the computer is not the NRC for
the location. Both of these changes are made in the
Hierarchically Addressed Locations screen in the
Configurator. See Chapter 12 for further details.

* Use Mailconvert to change the addresses of any users on a
hierarchically addressable location from the full mailnode
form to the shorter, location only, form. See below for
further details.

If the location names are to be changed too; perhaps to impose a
standardized convention where previously locations could have any code
they wanted to, the following changes have to be made in addition to the
ones already mentioned:

* A new location code should be added for each location code which
is to be changed.

* The users on the old location should be stored and then restored
to their new location.

Converting Remote Users' Addresses

If any location in your network changes from mailnode addressing to
hierarchical addressing, you can discard the sublocation code from the
address of every user on that location. This will reduce the amount of
space taken up by your databases.

How to convert remote users' addresses:

1. At the colon prompt, type MAILCONVERT locationcode.

If you enter both the location and sublocation code, a message
will inform you that the location name is too long. Repeat the
command using the location code alone.

2. Repeat this for each remote hierarchically addressed location
you want to convert.
