EFT and FSC Gateways
If you want to configure an EFT or FSC gateway out of HP Desk, this
chapter:
* Explains what you must do to configure your HP Desk system.
* Provides advice on defining an FSC gateway to suit both your
external application and the foreign service, to which you are
connecting.
* Explains how to set up foreign address aliases, if required.
For the special case of configuring an HP Desk gateway to HP Telex, full
configuration details are given.
Some of the main parameters in the configuration of a gateway are listed
here, together with explanatory notes to help you decide on their
suitability for your system. Full details of every parameter, its
permitted value range, and the screen at which it can be specified are
described in Chapter 12 .
Gateway Name
EFT/FSC messages for specified remote mailnodes are routed through the
appropriate named gateway, just as ordinary HP Desk messages are routed
through appropriate computers. The gateway name you supply could be a
generic name, such as TAPE. However, a name more descriptive of the
foreign communications medium and/or target computer, like HPIBMA, might
be more helpful. You may find it convenient to relate the gateway name
to the location code used for the foreign system.
Connecting IPC Filename
This file will contain information about the MPE files in which the
outgoing EFT/FSC messages are placed. The external transport application
for the gateway must read the IPC file to identify the data files to be
transported through the gateway. The Master Truck must have write access
to the file.
Before the gateway can be used, the IPC file must be created using the
MPE BUILD command, for example:
BUILD HPIBMIPC;MSG;REC=-80,,F,ASCII
Gateway Reference Name
This allows the message to be transported with the sender's full name,
full network address, and gateway identification in the ARPA header, so
that the foreign recipient can address any reply explicitly. (ARPA is
introduced in Chapter 4 .)
For the New York telex link, NY-TELEX-ARPA might be suitable. This would
result in the address of the sender in the HP Desk Distribution List.
Sender: Joanne Peck/CORPHQ/LE
appearing in the ARPA header entry as:
Sender: "Joanne Peck" @ [CORPHQ/LE. NY-TELEX-ARPA]
The @ character separates the sender's address from the Gateway Reference
Name when the two are concatenated, as in the above example.
Security of Messages
You can choose to allow private messages to pass through a gateway. The
use of Privilege Mode files to store private messages ensures that they
remain secure against unauthorized access while awaiting transport. If
using privilege mode to store mail, the external application that
processes the mail must have the appropriate capabilities.
Gateway Availability
Gateway availability, like computer availability, is defined as the times
at which the MPE files that are to contain the outgoing messages can be
created. The day is divided into 15-minute time slots. When there is
mail waiting to be transmitted to a remote mailnode, an MPE file is
created for that mailnode at the next specified 15-minute slot.
In general, the availability you specify here should correspond to the
times when the external transport system is running. To minimize the
number of files created, you should restrict the availability times;
otherwise a file is created each time the Master Truck runs.
The files are created by default in the HPMAIL group of the HPOFFICE
account. You can configure a different group in the HPOFFICE account to
be used, if you wish.
Default User
With some messages received over an FSC gateway, the ARPA header may
contain insufficient information for HP Desk to resolve the intended
addressee. It may be deficient in either user name, target address, or
both. HP Desk caters for this situation by requiring that a local user
is configured to accept any undeliverable mail received through a
gateway. The gateway will not operate without a Default User configured.
This user should be made responsible for reading incoming mail, resolving
unrecognized names and addresses, and forwarding the messages to their
intended recipients. General Delivery on a mailnode local to the FSC
gateway computer may be a good choice for Default User.
Routes
Exactly the same principles apply with routes through gateways as with
those to remote computers. You must configure a route between the
mailnode of the foreign system and the FSC gateway, both of which must
already exist in the database. The gateway name must match the name by
which the local computer knows the gateway.
The screens used to configure FSC and EFT gateways are described in
Chapter 12 .

How to configure an EFT or FSC gateway:

1. Run the Configurator by typing MAILCONFIG.

You must be either the MGR.HPOFFICE user or the HP Desk System
Administrator.

2. At the Location Information screen, configure the foreign
system as an HP Desk location. The location code you use must
be unique in the network.

3. Either make this location hierarchically addressed or give it a
sublocation, depending on the requirements of your external
application. Whichever you choose, the mailnode must be
specified as remote.

4. Ensure that any remote computers in your network that
want to send mail to the foreign system through this
gateway:
a. Add the new mailnode to their database.
b. Configure a route to this mailnode via the computer on
which the gateway is to be configured.

5. At the Foreign Service Connection/External File Transfer
screen, configure a gateway to the foreign system.

To specify an EFT gateway, the format of messages should be 1.
For an FSC gateway, the format can be any one of three types
of ARPA, depending on the requirements of the external
application.

The values you give to other parameters usually depend
on the requirements of the external application that
is to handle the messages after they pass through the
gateway.

6. At the Route Information screen, specify a route to the
mailnode of the foreign system through the gateway that you've
just configured.

7. If there's no Default User for undeliverable EFT/FSC messages
already configured for the local system, go to the Data
Information screen and specify one.

8. Return through the menus and exit the Configurator.
