Foreign Service Connection [ HP DeskManager Administration ] MPE/iX 5.0 Documentation

HP DeskManager Administration

Foreign Service Connection

FSC is the method by which HP Desk messages can be sent to and received
from non-HP Desk systems. In the case of the Pharaoh Company, the
foreign system is an IBM computer but it could just as easily be any
external application running on the HP 3000, such as a payroll or
invoicing program, which produces reports which are used by HP Desk
users.

As for EFT, a gateway must be configured on the computer at which the
messages will enter and leave the HP Desk system. The gateway must be
specified for the relevant format as agreed by the HP Desk Administrator,
and his counterpart on the foreign system. The HP Desk Administrator,
and probably the foreign computer Administrator, must provide an external
program to arrange for both the transport and , if necessary, further
conversion to and from the mutually agreed ARPA format. The information
required is in the manual HP DeskManager Customization.

The HP DeskManager Intrinsics

An improved method of communicating with non-HP Desk mail systems is now
provided by the Intrinsics. A gateway must be configured on the computer
at which messages will enter and leave the HP Desk system. Computers at
which gateways reside must have external programs resident on them to
allow the transportation of messages. You should refer to the manual HP
DeskManager Intrinsics for more information if you have the HP Desk
Intrinsics installed on your system.

Connecting to IBM

To configure an FSC gateway to an IBM computer, Hewlett-Packard has
products which manage the transporting and converting messages for you:

   *   HP OfficeConnect to PROFS

   *   HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS

Both of these applications run on the HP 3000 and interface with the FSC
gateway configured in HP Desk.

In our example, the Pharaoh Company has three IBM computers. At each of
the Corporate Headquarters there is an IBM mainframe which is used by the
Accounting Department for large-scale number crunching operations. The
financial information it provides is used by managers and financial
planners in the Corporate Administration Department for financial
forecasts and corporate planning. The third machine is in Liverpool and
is used for R&D work. The Network Co-ordinator has decided that the IBM
computers and the users on the HP Desk system must be able to talk to
each other. To achieve this, the HP Desk Administrators in New York,
London, and Liverpool must configure Foreign Service Connection (FSC)
gateways on their HP Desk systems.

The Network Co-ordinator has decided that it would be better to acquire
copies of HP Office Connect to DISOSS for NEWYORK and LONDON and a copy
of HP Office Connect to PROFS for LVRPOOL, than to write and implement
FSC application programs to do the same job.

Once the HP Desk Administrators for NEWYORK and LONDON have configured
FSC gateways for their computers, the IBM mainframes used by the two
Accounts departments can talk to each other through HP Desk. Also HP
Desk users in the US Corporate Administration department can receive
financial reports produced by the European Corporate Accounts department.

HP Telex

HP Telex allows HP Desk users to send message to telex subscribers and to
receive telexes in their In Trays. In outgoing messages, HP Desk and
Telex addresses can be mixed.

As HP Desk Administrator, you can choose to allow users sending telexes
to receive messages confirming the successful transmission of their telex
in their In Trays, or you may restrict them to receiving requested
acknowledgments. If you choose the latter, the acknowledgment is
restricted to RECEIVED (for instance the message has been successfully
transmitted to the correct telex number). In either case, users will be
informed if a message is not delivered to an addressee's telex number.

If you want to restrict the use of HP Telex, you can configure specific
departments as HP Telex users. Alternatively, you can create an HP Telex
department called HP Desk which will allow any HP Desk user to use HP
Telex. See Chapter 11 and the Administrator's Guides to HP Telex
manual for further details. In our example, the Pharaoh Company's
Corporate Headquarters in New York regularly sends telexes to an
advertising agency who handle the promotion of their products. As the
company was setting up an HP Desk network, they decided to take this
opportunity to acquire HP Telex and provide HP Desk users with an
integrated connection to the international telex network. Care was taken
to avoid any infringement of telecommunications authority regulations.

HP Telex was installed on NEWYORK and the HP Desk Administrator
configured an FSC gateway to it. Initially access to HP Telex would be
restricted to to the Administration department. That is only the
mailnode USCORP/AD would be configured as an HP Telex department. HP
Desk Administrators at the other Pharaoh sites would check with their
national telecommunications authorities to ascertain to what extent, if
any they might access the telex networks through HP Desk and its HP Telex
gateway in New York. If there weren't any problems, HP Telex would be
installed at further sites.
