GLOSSARY [ HP DeskManager Administration ] MPE/iX 5.0 Documentation

HP DeskManager Administration

GLOSSARY

Abbreviation
You can set up abbreviations for long HP Desk or MPE command strings. An
HP Desk abbreviation is a name for a single command or command string
which can be performed simply by typing that name. Abbreviations can be
issued by users, in exactly the same way as HP Desk commands. They can
even be placed on a function key for extra ease of use.

Acknowledgments
You can set acknowledgments on HP Desk messages. A message can then be
tracked in the Pending Tray to see how far the message has gone toward
its destination.

Administration
Administration is the name given to any task related to the use of HP
Desk that is regarded as too complex for a user to perform or is
supportive of a number of users.

Administrator
In the Administration manual, we refer to anyone performing an
administration task as the Administrator or the System Administrator. If
you are responsible for this task in your organization, you are an HP
Desk Administrator, whatever your personal job title may be!

Administrator Commands
These are commands issued by the Administrator to start or stop
particular HP Desk processes, or to check on the status of HP Desk.

AdvanceMail
AdvanceMail for the Vectra and IBM PC provides an easy to use interface
to HP Desk. Users of these products can exchange messages with other
users of HP Desk--whether they are AdvanceMail users, HP Desk users, or
connected users of another vendor's electronic mail system.

ADVMAILM
The OfficeShare LAN/3000 version of AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail
interacts with its own host program. This program, ADVMAILM has to be
started by the operator. Once started, it waits for AdvanceMail or
NewWave Mail users to sign on, then creates a session for each user in
which a host server program is started. This host server program then
interacts with the HP Desk database.

ARPA
Advance Research Projects Agency internet text format. A widely-accepted
format for the exchange of electronic mail between different
manufacturers' systems. Further information can be found in the manual
HP DeskManager Customization. A complete description of the ARPAnet
format is contained in RFC 822 - Standard for the Format of ARPA Internal
Text Messages, revised August 18 1982 by David H Crocker of the
Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, DE
19711.

ARPA header
Messages are transported from HP Desk to a foreign system in a standard
format, known as ARPA format. This format defines a standard header that
is appended to the HP Desk message.

ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange. This is recognized
by HP Desk in three forms:

   * a 7-bit character code, as used by many manufacturers' systems
(sometimes referred to as USASCII to distinguish it from the other
       forms);
   * an 8-bit version which includes the special characters required
       for translation into European languages;
   * a 16-bit version employed by the native name facility, provided
principally for Asian languages which use characters requiring
       16-bit representation.

AUDITFIL
The file AUDITFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE contains information on the messages
that pass through the HP Desk system on your computer.

Basic item
see Item

Batch Configuration
Batch updates are put into a file which is applied at a later date. The
advantage of this method is that large numbers of individual changes can
be collected together and then applied together. The disadvantage is
that the changes are not checked for context until the file is applied so
you can try to add users to a sublocation before you add the sublocation
itself and you are not told this is impossible until after the file has
been applied.

Batch updates are usually more convenient than online updates for
firstly, bulk configuration, such as aliases in the Directory of a
gateway computer; and secondly, changes which will be made to more that
one computer, for example, updates in a local network.

BCREPORT file
By creating (or file-equating) a file of this name in the MAILDB group of
the HPOFFICE account, you can ensure that any configuration changes made
using either the Configurator or the store/restore users or batch
configuration options of Mailutil will be recorded in batch configuration
format in this file.

Bin Emptier
This feature is only available if you have HP DeskManagerPLUS. The
process empties users' Waste Baskets.

Browsers
Browsers allow HP Desk users to read and display the contents of
messages and without actually having to convert them into an HP
Desk-understandable format.

Capability groups
The security of your HP Desk system depends on what capabilities the
people who use it have. By assigning users to one or more capability
groups, you can define things like which script files and abbreviations
they can use and what, if any, administrative capabilities they have.

Composite item
see Item

Configuration
This is the process that sets up HP Desk's Directory of users and fills
the databases with information on how HP Desk will work on the local
computer and, if in a network, link to other computers running HP Desk.

Configurator
see MAILCONFIG

Converters
Converters allow for the conversion of items from one format to another.
For example, a DCA document can be converted to text so that it can be
edited in the Work Area.

Country
A Country is a logical organisational structure that each of the
Locations must reside within.

Customization
The ability to modify a system's user interface and beyond that, details
of the way it works, to more closely match your requirements. See the
manual HP DeskManager Customization for further details.

Database
HP Desk uses IMAGE/3000 databases, called Local Database, Global Database
and, optionally, Native Database.

Database locking
HP Desk databases can be locked at either database or data set level. If
they are locked at database level, when one process is accessing the
database, all other processes are locked out. If they are locked at data
set level, when one process is accessing a particular data set, other
processes are allowed to access any other data set apart from the one
currently being used.

Datasets
Each of the HP Desk databases has a number of datasets within it, which
contain specific data. The three main datasets are Item-Structure,
Item-Header and Item-Content.

DCA
Document Content Architecture. The standard format for IBM's word
processing applications.

Default User
Occasionally, the destination address of a message incoming from a
foreign system can't be deciphered at the HP Desk gateway. When this
happens, it is put in the In Tray of the Default User. This user can be
anyone, but is usually General Delivery on the gateway system. The
Administrator can then try to forward the message. When using an FSC
gateway or the HP Desk Intrinsics, then always configure a Default User.

Default Route
Rather than having to specify a route for each mailnode in the network,
you can set up a Default route so that all of your mail to remote
mailnodes goes via a single route.

Directory
The Global Database holds a Directory of HP Desk users and their mail
addresses (that is, location and sublocation). HP Desk uses the
Directory to locate users - just as you'd use the phone book to find
telephone numbers. Each computer's Directory contains all registered
local users and their full mailnodes. In addition, a typical directory
contains the names and addresses of any frequently addressed remote
users.

Document conversion
It is quite common for users to receive a message containing a document
that they cannot edit. This is particularly likely if the message is
sent from or received at a personal computer. HP Desk overcomes this
incompatibility by using a number of document conversion programs. These
convert a document from one document format to another, before it is
delivered to the In Tray.

DS
Distributed Services are used for point-to-point HP 3000 communications.

EBCDIC
Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code. An 8-bit character code
used by IBM systems, for example PROFS.

EFT
External File Transfer gateways allow mail to be passed from one HP Desk
installation to another by a means other than Hewlett-Packard NS/3000 or
DS/3000 datacomm software. Typically, this could be by the physical
transport of a magnetic tape, used as a backup to an unreliable datacomm
link - or to transfer mail to another communications system.

EFT Truck or EFT Slave Truck
The EFT Truck performs, for messages received through an EFT gateway, a
similar function to the Slave Truck. The EFT Truck converts the contents
of the file back into HP Desk messages, which are then passed to the
Mailroom or Transport Manager in the normal way.

Encryptor
HP Desk is supplied with a standard encryptor program that provides a
high degree of security for messages from casual interference. In
addition, you can write encryption programs of your own if you wish.

Foreign address alias
The Administrator on a gateway computer can configure foreign address
aliases for foreign users. A foreign address alias provides an HP Desk
user with a pair of addresses - an HP Desk mail address and a foreign
address - which enables HP Desk to route messages to that user from both
HP Desk and a foreign system.

Foreign system
FSC gateways allow mail to leave HP Desk and be passed to another
application. In this way mail can be exchanged with foreign messaging
systems, such as IBM's Professional Office System (PROFS).

Forms
Using forms in messages can provide a simple and effective way of
gathering or presenting information. Applications of forms in HP Desk
could include telephone message notes, time sheets, questionnaires, and
so on. By making use of acknowledgment level 6 on the SENDFORM command,
users can conduct surveys using pre-defined forms and then collect the
replies together for easy processing. Forms for use in HP Desk must be
created using the VPLUS/3000 FORMSPEC program.

FSC
Foreign Service Connection. This feature provides a gateway into and out
of HP Desk, permitting the exchange of messages between HP Desk and other
office systems, such as IBM's PROFS. The FSC converts messages into ARPA
format and interfaces with an external application, such as HP
OfficeConnect to PROFS, which supervises their transport to or from the
foreign system.

FSC Truck or FSC Slave Truck
An FSC Truck performs, for messages received through an FSC gateway, a
similar function to the Slave Truck. The FSC Truck converts the contents
of the file back into HP Desk messages, which are then passed to the
Mailroom or Transport Manager in the normal way.

Garbage Collector
This process, when run, will physically delete garbage from the HP Desk
database, including emptied Waste Baskets. This feature is only
available with HP DeskManagerPLUS.

Gateway
A gateway is simply a means of allowing mail to leave HP Desk. From the
point of view of HP Desk, the gateway is regarded just as any other
computer, in fact as a virtual computer. At the gateway, mail - instead
of being passed to another computer - is stored in an MPE file. Another
application program must organize further transport of this file from the
HP 3000. A gateway can be one of two types: external file transfer
(EFT) or foreign service connection (FSC).

General Delivery
If any addressee is not registered in the Directory, the Mailroom places
the message in the In Tray of a special user called General Delivery. A
General Delivery user is configured automatically by HP Desk for each
mailnode on the local computer, to act as a depot for mail that could not
be delivered at that mailnode.

Global Database
HP Desk uses the Global Database to store the Directory.

Help
HP Desk is supplied with a comprehensive online Help system. All the
files that comprise the Help system are accessible, editable, extendible.

Hierarchic addressing
This allows users to simply specify a location code, rather than a full
mailnode address. This means that a message can be addressed to a user
name and location only, and this is enough to get the message to the NRC.
At the NRC, the Distribution List can be fully addressed from the NRC's
Directory and passed to the recipient's mailnode in the usual way.

HP Convert/DCA
This application can convert documents received in HP Desk messages
between IBM's DCA format and HP Word or ASCII text.

HP Desk Intrinsics
The HP Desk Intrinsics are available as part of HP DeskManagerPLUS. The
HP Desk Intrinsics provide a simple way for external applications to
access mailing and other services in HP Desk.

HP DeskMon
HP DeskMon is available as part of HP DeskManagerPLUS. HP DeskMon
provides a means to monitor and report the status of HP Desk systems.

HP Draw
An HP 3000 application with which you can create quality presentation
aids, containing a variety of shapes, text fonts and sizes, and colors.
HP Draw figure files can be included in HP Desk messages.

HP EasyChart
An HP 3000 chart-making application with which you can produce line
charts, bar charts, pie charts, and scatter charts.

HP File/Library
This optional extension to HP Desk allows you to share documents with
other HP Desk users and store infrequently used items in an archive.

HP NewWave
HP NewWave is an object oriented PC product. It is designed to enable
users to use multiple applications to collect, analyze, and communicate
information from different sources and formats without having to remember
application names or data files.

HP OfficeConnect to DISOSS
This Hewlett-Packard HP 3000 application enables HP Desk to be connected
to an IBM Distributed Office Support System (DISOSS), through an FSC
gateway. HP Desk and DISOSS users can exchange mail, and HP Desk users
can store and retrieve documents from the DISOSS Library on the IBM
mainframe.

HP OfficeConnect to PROFS
This Hewlett-Packard HP 3000 application enables HP Desk to be connected
to an IBM Professional Office System (PROFS), through an FSC gateway.
Users of each system can then exchange mail in a manner almost unchanged
from normal.

HP OfficeFax
The HP OfficeFax product allows HP Desk users access to the fax network.

HP OpenMail
The HP OpenMail product provides a standards-based, open systems,
enterprise-wide electronic information distribution service over a
network of Unix servers.

HP Schedule
HP Schedule is available as part of HP DeskManagerPLUS. It enables you
to: find out a convenient time for everyone to attend a meeting; book
resources - rooms, projectors, chairs, and other equipment; notify
everyone when a meeting is finalized; cancel inconvenient meetings and
re-schedule new ones.

HP Slate
HP Slate is a word-processor supplied with HP Desk to aid in the creation
longer messages. This can be run from the Work Area.

HP Telex
HP Telex allows HP Desk users to send messages to telex subscribers and
to receive telexes in their In Trays.

HP Word
A document processing application which runs on the HP 3000. Features
include easy text entry and advanced text formatting and editing
capabilities. HP Word documents can be included in HP Desk messages.

Installation
A general term for a place or organization that uses HP Desk, whether it
is a single computer system or a multi-computer network.

IPC file
InterProcess Communication file. A special type of MPE file used by HP
Desk's transport system. It describes the identity and destination of
one or more MPE files containing messages to be transported by an
external transport system.

Item
A collection of data held by a user in HP Desk. This data can be text,
spreadsheets, graphics figures, forms, or data files. A basic item is
one that cannot be opened with the OPEN command; examples are
Distribution Lists, text, HP Word documents, or MPE files. An item that
can be opened is known as a composite item. Examples of composite items
are messages, packages, and folders.

LearnDesk
LearnDesk is HP Desk's computer-based training course. This training
simulates HP Desk and allows you to use the terminal just as if you were
using HP Desk itself. It is the best way for a user to learn about HP
Desk. It can be accessed from HP Desk's Main Menu.

Local Administrator
A user with Local Administrator capability has the power to add, modify
or delete users from the Local database, and also integrate other
applications for the group. One of the most regular administration tasks
is the maintenance of HP Desk's Directory of users - adding new names,
modifying entries for people who have moved location, and deleting the
names of staff who have left your organization.

Local Database
The Local Database contains HP Desk items stored by each user. Items can
be either messages, or other items kept in their Work Area or stored in
their Filing Cabinet. It also holds information about the configuration
of the local computer and its users, and the mailnode queues in which
mailed messages are held while waiting to be collected and delivered.

Location code
The part of an HP Desk mail address that identifies a large group of
users, such as a division of a company.

Mail address
The part of an HP Desk Distribution List that tells HP Desk where to send
a message. A mail address comprises a location code, a slash, and a
sublocation code - for example USCORP/LE - which specifies an HP Desk
mailnode. All HP Desk users must be registered on a mailnode.

MAILALTLOCSTATS
This gives access to the local statistics file for the databases.

MAILBINEMPTY
This operator command will invoke the Bin Emptier process. (You can also
use MAILSTART BINEMPTY.) The Bin Emptier process can only be run if you
have HP DeskManagerPLUS.

MAILBUILDNATIVE
Builds or purges the Native Database.

MAILCANCELABORT
This operator command cancels a previously issued MAILUSERABORT command.

MAILCONFIG
This is the command used by the HP Desk Administrator to run the
Configurator. This is used to: create Local and Global Databases of a
suitable size for your installation; adjust the size of databases to be
nearer to the actual experienced usage; record information in the
databases about the users and their locations; record information in the
databases about the local computer and, if necessary, how this computer
communicates with others in a network.

Mailconvert
Converts from mailnode to hierarchic addressing.

MAILDSSLAVEOFF
This operator command disables the DS Slave Trucks only.

MAILDSSLAVEON
This operator command enables the DS Slave Trucks only.

Mailedit

down the Transport Manager and Master Trucks.

MAILMANON
This operator command starts the Transport Manager and a specified number
of Master Trucks.

Mailnode
A mailnode is the smallest addressable unit within an HP Desk system: a
hierarchic location or a sublocation.

Mailnode Addressing
With this type of addressing, full mailnode address is used for the
delivery of mail. This means that a message is addressed to a user name
and mailnode. Even in Hierarchic Addressing, Mailnode Addressing must be
used at the NRC, where the names in the Distribution List become fully
addressed, and the message is passed to the recipient's mailnode.

MAILNODEREPORT
This operator command reports on outstanding mail for a specified
mailnode.

MAILNSSLAVEOFF
This operator command stops the NS Slave monitor process.

MAILNSSLAVEON

Summary Report created by the last
MAILMAINT command.

MAILRESTORE
This operator command marks the databases to inhibit further access and
restores the databases and associated files from backup tape.

Mailroom
The Mailroom performs the same tasks that a mailroom clerk would in a
conventional office.  The Mailroom sorts and delivers local mail;
regularly collecting mail from the Out Trays of users of the local
computer, sorting the mail, placing it in the local mail queue, and then
delivering the mail to the In Trays of local registered users.

MAILROOMOFF
This operator command closes down the Mailroom and any server programs
which might be running.

MAILROOMON
This operator command starts the Mailroom job, which performs local mail
delivery.

This operator command reports on routing information for remote
mailnodes.

MAILSCHEDULE
This operator command allows you to schedule the Maintenance job to run
automatically, at specified times and on specific days.

MAILSHOWNODE
This operator command displays information about what mail is outstanding
for all computers or for a specified computer. It also allows you to
send Sequenced Directory Updates automatically at specified times on
specified days.

MAILSHOWUSER
This operator command displays details of local users currently signed on
to HP Desk.

MAILSHREDOFF
This operator command instructs the Supervisor to shutdown the Garbage
Collection process. You can also use the command MAILSTOP SHREDDER.
(This process can only be run if you have HP DeskManagerPLUS.)

MAILSHREDON

This operator command prevents Slave Truck programs from delivering mail
to your computer and sends a shutdown request to FSC Trucks. It also
stops the NS Slave monitor process.

MAILSLAVEON
This operator command allows Slave Trucks, controlled by Master Truck
programs on remote computers, to deliver mail to your computer. It also
starts the NS Slave monitor process.

MAILSTATUS
This operator command displays summary information about HP Desk jobs, as
well as the time and date of the last database store and maintenance
program run. If you have HP DeskManagerPLUS, it will also display NS
Transport information.

MAILSTORE
This operator command marks the databases to inhibit further access and
stores the databases and associated files to backup tape.

Mailstream
Is the job streamer program. It streams jobs held in MAILJOB.HPOFFICE.

MAILUNLOAD
This operator command marks the databases to inhibit further access and
uses the DBUNLOAD command to unload the Local and Global Databases to
tape.

MAILUSERABORT
This operator command warns users that the User Interface is going to be
shut down, later terminates their MPE session if they do not log off
within the specified time, and disables the User Interface so that new
users can not log on to HP Desk.

MAILUSEROFF
This operator command disables the User Interface program and associated
programs to prevent new users from logging on to HP Desk.

MAILUSERON
This operator command enables the User Interface and associated programs.
It also "allocates" the User Interface (that is, loads it but does not
run it).

Mailutil
For updates to your Local database, for the application of remote
updates, and for batch configuration a utility called Mailutil is
provided.

Maintenance
see MAILMAINT

Master Truck
A Master Truck runs on the local computer. It is activated by the
Transport Manager at times defined in the system configuration. Then,
the Master Truck attempts to establish a communication link with the
remote computer. If unsuccessful, it tries again later; if successful,
it activates a Slave Truck on the remote computer. Once this is done,
the Master Truck passes the mail across to the Slave Truck.

MConText
Provides conversion between between HP Slate, HP Word, and MemoMaker--and
from any of them to ASCII text.

MSG150
The host server program for AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail, which is
supplied with HP Desk and installed with it on the HP 3000. MSG150 does
not interact with the Mailroom, but performs its own manipulation of HP
Desk's databases to distribute mail.

Native Database
This database holds the reference of the names of the Native users in HP
Desk. The database is only built if you explicitly request that it
should be in Mailconfig.

Native User Name
HP Desk users are allowed the use of additional names in languages that
require character sets other than the standard USASCII (that is
non-USASCII). These are referred to as Native user names and they are
held in a database built for the purpose, known as the Native Database.

Network
If HP Desk is installed on a number of computers in your organization, an
HP Desk network can be established to allow communication within HP Desk
from one computer to another. This communication is normally achieved
with the use of DS/3000 or NS/3000 software. See also system.

Network Administrator
You could assign a datacomm expert to be an HP Desk Network
Administrator, with the capability to keep HP Desk's route network in
order.

NewWave Mail
An electronic mailing product for Hewlett-Packard's NewWave environment.
Users are able to send and receive HP NewWave objects to and from other
users on the HP Desk network, as well as other networks.

NewWave Object
This is something that is created in NewWave. Each object has its own
icon and set of menu commands for working with it.

NewWave Package
a NewWave package is a collection of NewWave Mail objects that have been
sent to an HP Desk user. The user can convert the NewWave package to an
HP Desk package using the CONVERT command.

Non-USASCII
See ASCII and Native User Name

NRC
For any location configured as a hierarchic location, at least one
computer must be configured to resolve the mailnode addresses for that
location - that is, add the sublocations so that messages can be
delivered to the recipient's address. A computer configured to support a
location in this way is known as a Node Resolving Computer or NRC.

NS
Network Services are used for networking a series of HP 3000s together
over a LAN.

OCT
Object Code Translation can make a significant improvement in performance
on an MPE/XL system.

Operator Commands
See Administrator Commands

Passedit
Is a program which allows specific HP Desk passwords to be recorded in a
privileged file (MAILRECS.MAILDB.HPOFFICE) which HP Desk looks at when
streaming jobs.

PCMAILOFF
This operator command stops the AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail OfficeShare
LAN/3000 host monitor.

PCMAILON
This operator command starts the AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail OfficeShare
LAN/3000 host monitor.

Programmer
Someone, who in consultation with the System Manager, writes application
programs specific to your organization's needs and installation's
requirements. As such, they may write programs to interface or integrate
with HP Desk.

Remore Mailnode
A mail address that resides on another machine.

Route List
A Distribution List used by the Routing and Authorization feature of HP
DeskManagerPLUS

Routing and Authorization
This feature is available as part of HP DeskManagerPLUS. It gives users
the capability to send messages to a list of people, one after another,
allowing each person to add information to the message, for the purposes
of authorization, before it is sent to the next person in the Route List.

Sequenced Directory Updates
Sequenced updates can be used to automate the distribution of directory
updates in a network.

Script file
By writing script files, it is possible to highly customize HP Desk.
Script files can set up names for sequences of MPE, HP Desk, or specific
script commands. These can then be issued by users, in exactly the same
way as HP Desk commands.

Servers
HP Desk servers are HP Desk processes that are accessed by sending
special messages to them. When the Mailroom attempts to deliver the
message, it will see that it is sending to a server rather than a user,
and the message is delivered to that server process. The server can then
act on the information contained in the message.

Shredder
See Garbage Collector.

Slave Truck
The Master Truck activates a Slave Truck on the remote computer. Once
this is done, the Master Truck passes the mail across to the Slave Truck.
If the mail is addressed to users of the receiving computer, the Slave
Truck then activates the Mailroom which delivers them locally. If the
mail has to be forwarded to another remote computer, the Slave Truck
activates the Transport Manager to handle onward routing of the mail from
this computer.

STARTMTRUCK
This operator command instructs the Transport Manager to start a
specified number of new trucks in addition to the existing trucks
running.

STATSFIL
The file STATSFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE contains information on the operation
of the HP Desk system on your computer.

STOPMTRUCK
This operator command instructs the Transport Manager to stop a specified
number of trucks that are currently running.

Store and forward
HP Desk uses a technique known as store and forward to send mail around a
network. This passes a message along a chain of linked computers, one
step at a time. When a message arrives at any computer in the chain, a
copy of the message is stored until that computer is ready to transmit
the message forward.

Sublocation code
The part of an HP Desk mail address that can be used to identify small
groups of users at the same location - such as departments within a
division.

Supervisor
The HP Desk Supervisor program controls and monitors all other HP Desk
programs that may need to run. In a single-computer system, the most
important program running under the Supervisor is called the Mailroom.

SUPVON
This operator command starts the Supervisor program and its permanent son
process, the Timer program. It also "allocates" the operator interface
(that is, loads the operator interface but doesn't run it.)

System
An HP Desk system is an installation that runs on a single node or
computer. It may comprise one or more locations, and a number of users.
See also network.

System Manager
Your HP 3000 has a System Manager responsible for it, or for a network of
HP 3000s, on a day-to-day basis. This person is an experienced computer
professional who co-ordinates such things as the network, the MPE
accounting structure, data security, and your organization's contact with
Hewlett-Packard. As such, they are the final point of reference in your
organization regarding any operational aspect of the HP 3000.

The System Manager is thus ultimately responsible for HP Desk, has
probably been involved in office automation planning within your
organization, and should be at least involved in the implementation of
the system. Where security is important they may need to take on some HP
Desk administration tasks.

Transport Manager
The Transport Manager controls the transport of mail to remote computers.

User
Someone who uses the software in the course of their work to help them
better succeed in their particular jobs. One of the programs they use
will be HP Desk. Users of HP Desk may exercise some control over the set
up of HP Desk that they see - their User Profile - or may write their own
applications for use with HP Desk. Alternatively, they may have this
done for them as an HP Desk administration task.

User Profile
Every HP Desk user has the ability to customize the interface that HP
Desk presents to them - their User Profile - to suit their needs or
preferences. The details of a User Profile are held in a file as part of
that user's configuration. By default, all users are configured with a
standard profile containing values set by Hewlett-Packard. You also have
the ability to set up standard User Profile files containing values you
choose, and configure users with these in the system configuration.

View/3000
A forms data entry application. All of the forms that HP Desk uses are
View/3000 forms.

XDS
An eXtra Data Segment is an area of memory that is used by an
application. HP Desk uses an XDS to pass information between it and
other applications.
