HP DeskManager Administration
Problems with NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail
NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail are totally dependent on HP Desk, so the
procedures which maintain HP Desk also maintain both of these products.
This section describes the actions you should take whenever there is a
problem with NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail.
System Failure
If MPE fails while NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail is running there is
nothing to recover. Once HP Desk is up and running again users should
repeat any commands that were not carried out because of the system
failure. For example, if NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail was exporting a
file from HP Word at the time of the failure, then it is possible that a
file was created in the user's account and should be deleted. Such files
have a filename of the form Dnnnnnnn, where n represents a digit. If
your NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail users all log on to the same account
then you can delete any such files for them. Alternatively, you can
check each user's files and delete the file or instruct them to delete
any such files.
Software Problems
NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail provide three aids to diagnose problems:
* Error messages.
* Dumpfile.
* Tracefile.
NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail have an on-line help facilities which gives
you information on any error message which might be displayed.
If users are using NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail interactively, any error
messages will appear on the screen as the error occurs. If they are
using the automatic transfer facility any error messages, together with
the explanatory text is stored in the Transfer log.
Dumpfile
Whenever the MSG150 program encounters an error it terminates and
automatically creates the file MSGDnnn, where nnn is the device ID. This
file records the last 20 transactions. If the file is created you should
print off this file and give it to your Hewlett-Packard representative.
Tracefile
If NewWave Mail or AdvanceMail does not seem to be working properly or is
consistently giving you the same error messages you can set up a trace
file to record what is happening. The command to start tracing should be
included in the user's log on file LOGON.HPD. The command line is:
SETJCW HPDMSGTRACE 1
This command switches tracing on. In turn, this creates the file
MSGTnnn, where nnn is the device ID, in the user's account. This file
records all transactions in a NewWave Mail or an AdvanceMail session.
You should print out this file and give it to your Hewlett-Packard
representative to diagnose the problem.
