Operator Commands and the Supervisor
Most HP Desk processes run under the control of the Supervisor. When you
type any of the commands described in this section, a request is sent to
the Supervisor to either start up or shut down the relevant process.
Responses to a MAIL...ON Command
Any MAIL...ON command starts up the Supervisor if it is not already
running. If the Supervisor cannot log on, the JOBFENCE and LIMIT
parameters for the system need checking. The values may need changing so
that the Supervisor may log on.
When the Supervisor acts on the start up request and the process has
successfully started, a message appears on the Operator's console saying:
HPDESK - process name created on date at time
A message is sent for each process started up by a command.
When the command is sent from a terminal other than the system console, a
message is also sent to that terminal if possible.
A delay may occur with error messages. You might find errors concerning
a MAIL...ON command being reported some time after it appears to have
completed successfully.
If a MAIL...ON command is issued for a parameter which is already running
or is starting, the Supervisor ignores it and no messages are displayed.
Responses to a MAIL...OFF Command
When the command is issued, the following message appears on the console
and the issuing terminal:
HPDESK - process name requested to stop on date at time
If the command was issued at a terminal other than the operator console,
the same message also appears on that terminal.
When the process has actually stopped or up to 2 minutes afterwards, the
following message appears on the operator console:
HPDESK - process name stopped
The amount of time between these two messages being displayed depends on
the individual process and the amount of work it still has to process.
For example, the Mailroom will not shut down until it has dealt with all
outstanding messages. This may take half an hour on a busy system.
If a MAIL...OFF command is issued for a process which is already shut
down or stopping, the Supervisor ignores it and no message is displayed.
