Improving Performance
HP Desk version B.05.00 includes enhancements to relieve the system of
the certain overheads associated with the locking and unlocking of the
databases.
Controlling Disk Usage
If HP DeskManagerPLUS is installed and the Garbage Collector is running
then it will maintain the level of "dead" data in the database to a
minimum. However, disk usage by users may still represent a problem, so
it may be worthwhile setting default limits on disk space to users.
Default limits for all the users can be set in the Local Control Menu of
the Configurator. Individual limits can be set for particular users in
the User Menu. These limits can be either higher or lower than the
system limit.
When a user's Work Area or Filing Cabinet becomes over 85% full, the user
is told every time an item is moved to or filed in the Filing Cabinet, or
an item is copied to or created in the Work Area. As HP Desk
Administrator, you are able to monitor the amount of space being used by
each user by looking at the Local User Summary in the Maintenance Summary
Report and the User Statistics Network Statistics Report.
If disk space represents a problem, you should encourage your users to
regularly delete unwanted items from their Work Areas and Filing
Cabinets. Particularly concentrate on the Work Area because items here
are owned solely by the creator and deleting them will free up disk
space. In the Filing Cabinet, however, items are often shared, so one
user deleting the item won't necessarily result in making disk space
available.
If a user exceeds their Work Area limit, he or she is not able to copy
items to the Work Area or create items in it. Similarly, if the Filing
Cabinet limit is exceeded, the user cannot copy items to or move items to
his or her Filing Cabinet. If either limit is exceeded, the user is
still able to delete items.
Once your system has been running for a while, it may become apparent
that either the system limit has been incorrectly set or that individual
users require more or less disk space than has been allocated to them.
Performance Factors
The following might also affect the performance of your HP Desk system:
* Running the Garbage Collector (Shredder) concurrently with the
user interface, although this can be minimized by altering the
Garbage Collector profile so that at busy times the program runs
at a lower MPE priority or is disabled. (See Chapter 17 for
more information.)
* Running the Maintenance job concurrently with the user interface.
See Chapter 17 for more information.
* Data sets which are more than 60% full, particularly the
Item-Header dataset. See the section on MERROR reports in Chapter
17 earlier in this manual.
* On smaller systems if too many HP Desk sessions are trying to
access the database at the same time.
