Network Statistics Reports
If your HP Desk system is part of a larger network, you will find it
useful to monitor mail to, from, and through your computer. HP Desk can
produce network statistics reports which enable you to do this. These
are optionally produced when the Maintenance is run. They will help you
spot potential bottlenecks in the system and pinpoint reasons for delays
in delivering messages. You can also see how much your datacomm lines
are being used, making it easier to spot which are being over-utilized or
under-utilized.
All of this gives you a clearer indication of what changes need to be
made to the hardware configuration, message routing, and so on to give
you the best possible performance for the minimum running costs. They
will also help you allocate your data communication costs correctly.
Network statistics also give you information about how much individual
users are using the system.
You can write your own applications to merge and sort the statistics
output files. This allows you to use the network statistics to produce
specific reports for your organization. Details on writing such
applications can be found in the manual HP DeskManager Customization.
The reports produced by the network statistics programs are described in
Chapter 21 . Briefly they are:
User Statistics This report provides you with a daily
"snapshot" of the status of HP Desk in terms of
the amount of disk space each user is using.
User Mail Statistics This report shows how many messages have been
sent by each user.
User Remote Mail This report gives details of the number of
Statistics messages sent by local users to remote
mailnodes. Using this report you can work out
how much of your local data communications
costs should be allocated to each of your
departments or cost centers.
Incoming Node Statistics This report shows the volume of mail arriving
Report at your computer intended for both local users
and to be forwarded to remote users.
Outgoing Node Statistics This report is similar to the previous one,
Report showing the volume of mail leaving your
computer.
Using this report together with the Incoming
Node Statistics Report, you can work out how
much of your data communications costs is due
to mail sent by your own users and how much is
due to mail routed through your computer from
remote mailnodes.
Computer Statistics This report gives details of communications
between your local computer and the next
computer along each route you have configured.
For example, the average delay in message
transmission.
Availability Statistics This report shows you for how long the user
Report interface, the Mailroom, and the Transport
Manager were unavailable.
