SPU Switchover/XL User's Guide

Planning

Good planning includes selecting the appropriate hardware and software,
and gathering the necessary directory information.

Hardware

Select the appropriate hardware to be used for SPU Switchover/XL:

   * Determine which two 900 Series HP 3000 computer systems will serve
as home and alternate systems for each other.

       _________________________________________________________________

NOTE These two SPUs must be comparable in both performance and
configuration limitations. If they are not, the alternate
system's performance could degrade when the switchover
             occurs.

       _________________________________________________________________

   * Determine which nonsystem volume sets will be switchable between
       the SPUs.

   * Ensure that the fiber link drives to be configured as switchable
volume sets are connected to each SPU on their own fiber link
       cards.

Software

Select which application programs you want to make available with
SPU Switchover/XL:

   * Determine which application programs and data require high
       availability.

   * Ensure that the application programs and data reside on one of the
       switchable volume sets.

NOTE The switchable volume sets are already initialized with the VOLUTIL utility on the home system. SPU Switchover/XL configuration is done through SYSGEN.
Directories Select the appropriate directories to be used for SPU Switchover/XL: * Determine the switchable volume accounting information that must be duplicated on both system volume sets.
NOTE Changes made to the directory on one system are not automatically made on the other system.
Configuration Requirements Following are the configurations reqired for SPU Switchover/XL: * Configuration must be done from the system where all switchable volume sets are currently mounted, with the exception of the ASYSTEM command. The ASYSTEM command names the system from which you execute the command; therefore, the ASYSTEM command must be executed on both the home and alternate systems. * Both the home system and alternate systems must be up and running during the configuration. * During configuration, all volume sets to be configured must be mounted in the MASTER or MEMBER state on the system where the configuration is being done. The system where the configuration is being done must be booted first. This allows the system to take control of all switchable volume sets. The system where the configuration is being done must have control of all the switchable volume sets during configuration. * Every nonsystem volume set that is configured as switchable, must be assigned a home system. The home system is the system where work will normally be done on the volume set. When configuration is complete, the volume set will reside on its home system except during a reconfiguration or after a switchover has occurred.
