Emergency Switchovers
The following procedure assumes that Alpha has experienced a hardware
failure and has stopped sending system status messages to Beta. This
procedure enables a system operator to switch control of switchable
volume sets from the home system (Alpha) to the alternate system (Beta).
1. Verify and respond to the following message that appears when the
home system (Alpha) does not respond to the system status messages
from the alternate system (Beta):
/00:00/nn/ACKNOWLEDGE SYSTEM ALPHA NOT RESPONDING.
PLEASE CHECK ALPHA (Y/N)?
This message is displayed every 30 seconds until the operator
acknowledges the problem.
2. Attempt to dump and reboot the home system to rule out a software
failure. If a software failure has not occurred, proceed to the
next step.
3. Verify that the problem involves a hardware failure, then, if
necessary, log off existing jobs and sessions on the alternate
system (Beta) so that it can accept the additional processing load
from the home system (Alpha).
4. Enter the following command from the alternate system's console
(Beta):
: SWITCHOVER FROM=ALPHA TO=BETA Return
The alternate system (Beta) responds by displaying the following
message:
/00:00/nn/SPU SWITCHOVER FROM ALPHA TO BETA STARTING.
After this message appears, the alternate system (Beta) does the
following:
a. Unlocks the currently locked switchable volume sets on the
home system (Alpha).
b. Locks and opens the volume sets on the alternate system
(Beta).
c. Displays a message for each volume set indicating that
switch over of that set is complete.
d. Reply to the following message that appears when switchover
has successfully finished:
/00:00/nn/ACKNOWLEDGE SPU SWITCHOVER FROM ALPHA
TO BETA COMPLETE (Y/N)?
=REPLY nn,Y
This message is displayed every 30 seconds until the
operator acknowledges completion of the switchover.
e. Enter the SPUCONTROL STATUS command to verify the status of
the SPU Switchover/XL environment.
: SPUCONTROL STATUS Return
