Performing System Operation Tasks

Securing and Labeling Tapes 

It is important to identify each tape.  The following examples provide
tape security and labeling information.

To secure and label reel tapes 

   1.  Remove the write ring to ensure that the tape is write-protected.

2. Label the tape.

Include the following information on the label: Table 1-1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Label | Description | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Requestor's name | The name of the person who requested the | | | tape. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Creation date | The date the tape is created. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Effective date | The date the tape can be used. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Purge date | The date the files can be erased. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | File identification | The name of the account or group. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Job Number | The job number. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Remarks | Whether the tape is a "STORE" tape. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Device number | The device number used to create the tape. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Volume n of m | The number of tapes of the tape and the | | | total number of tapes. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Initials | The operator's initials. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- b. Position the label on the face of the tape (opposite side from the write ring). Reel tape labels should look similar to this:

To secure and label DDS tapes 1. Remove the cassette from the DDS tape drive. 2. Slide the tab to the right side of the DDS cassette, if you have been writing to tape.

3. Prepare and position the label. Cassette tape labels should look similar to the example below:
