Determining Tape Characteristics
There are two tape characteristics you need to know. One is volume
identity. The other is data density. Volume identity is provided in the
form of a label magnetically written on the tape. This label may be in
any of several formats described below. Data density describes the data
format in terms of the number of bytes per inch of data written to the
tape.
You can display the parameters for both characteristics by entering the
SHOWDEV command.
Display Tape Characteristics with SHOWDEV
Entering the command SHOWDEV TAPE produces a listing like the one
illustrated below. Referring to the listing, note that one of the
columns is titled VOLID and another is titled DEN.
Volume identity is displayed in the column titled VOLID. Data density is
displayed in the column titled DEN. A parameter named label type also may
be displayed in the VOLID column. Note that these columns will have
information only if a tape has been mounted on the tape device and "auto
volume recognition" (AVR) by placing the device online.
For example, enter:
SHOWDEV TAPE
The screen displays:

Column Label Meaning
LDEV Displays the logical device number and also may include one of
the following:
J- Accepts jobs.
D - Accepts data.
A - Accepts jobs and data.
AVAIL Describes the status of device. Includes:
AVAIL - The device is available as a real, nonshareable device.
SPOOLED - The device is available via input or output spooling.
UNAVAIL - The device is not available (spooled device queues are
closed or the device is owned by a user process).
OWNERSHIP Device ownership (if applicable), where:
SYS - Owned by system. If #nnn appears, it specifies the
process identification number (PIN) of the owning process
(running program).
SPOOLER IN - Owned by a spooler; used as an input spooler.
SPOOLER OUT - Owned by a spooler; used as an output spooler.
Column Label Meaning
VOLID The volume identification; the listing also may include one of
the following label type identifiers:
IBM - The named magnetic tape volume label is written in IBM
format.
ANSI - The named magnetic tape volume label is written in ANSI
format.
NOLABEL - The named magnetic tape volume has no label. Default.
DEN Density of the tape; may include one of the following:
6250 - Density of 6250 BPI (bytes-per-inch).
1600 - Density of 1600 BPI, or the density of the tape is
unrecognizable.
800 - Density of 800 BPI (bytes-per-inch).
ASSOCIATION Shows the session number of an associated user and the device
class to which the device was associated.
SHOWDEV Syntax

SHOWDEV [classname]
Table 6-1. SHOWDEV Parameters
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| Parameter | Meaning |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| ldev | Logical device number. If both ldev and classname are omitted, |
| | information is displayed for all devices on the system. |
| | |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | |
| classname | Device class name of device(s) for which status information is |
| | to be displayed. May apply to several devices. If both ldev |
| | and classname are omitted, status information for all devices on |
| | the system is displayed. |
