Correcting Space Problems
Because of the way data is written to disks, files become fragmented,
disk space is not fully utilized, and disks may appear to be filled up
even when they are not. One solution to the problem is to store low
priority spoolfiles and spoolfiles retained for permanent storage onto
tapes, thus freeing space on the disks.
This section describes the use of the DISCFREE utility to determine the
amount of free space on a disk. Refer to the previous section for
instructions on creating and loading spoolfiles to tape.
DISCFREE provides two types of reports on disk space. One is the
HISTOGRAM, which reports on the distribution of disk space in terms of
blocks of contiguous sectors. The other is the ALLOCATION report, which
describes the total amount of free space on the disk without regard to
its distribution.
