System Administrator's Quick Reference Guide
Classification of Disks
Disks are classified as follows:
* One disk pack is called a volume.
* A group of volumes (related disks) is called a volume set.
* A volume set can be subdivided into groups of volumes called classes.
* MPE XL recognizes two types of volume sets: system and nonsystem.
A volume set consists of one master volume and one or more member
volumes.
A single volume can belong to more than one volume class. On the other
hand, it can never belong to more than one volume set.
System volume sets contain system related programs and files. The master
volume of the system volume set contains a bootable system image and
system configuration, and is the only volume needed to load and start the
system.
Nonsystem volume sets contain user files.
