Recovering Files with DISCUTIL
DISCUTIL is a disk configuration utility that is called from the initial
system load prompt (ISL>). Use it to configure disk devices and move
logically inoperable files from disk to tape.
The DISCUTIL SAVE command saves disk files to tape. The volutil:
RECOVER command is then used to recreate and read the files from tape
back to disk.
Note that entering the ISL facility requires a system restart. Send a
TELL or WARN message to your users that the system is going down.
Entering DISCUTIL
Follow the steps below:
1. Reset the system with a soft reset. At the system console, enter:
:CTRL B
CM>TC
2. Override Autoboot. When the message TO OVERRIDE, PRESS ANY KEY
WITHIN 10 SECONDS appears, press:
Press any key.
3. Press Y to boot from the primary boot path when this prompt
appears:
BOOT FROM PRIMARY BOOT PATH (Y or N)?
4. Press Y to interact with IPL when this prompt appears:
INTERACT WITH IPL (Y or N)?
5. Call DISCUTIL by entering:
ISL>DISCUTIL
Retrieve Files and Save to Tape
To retrieve files from disk and save to tape, follow the steps below:
1. Enter:
DISCUTIL:SAVE
This initiates the following dialog:
ENTER THE FILE SET TO BE SAVED:filename.group.acct
ENTER THE LDEV:ldev n
ENTER THE VOLUME SET NAME:volsetname
ENTER THE MODIFICATION DATE (MM/DD/YYYY):mm/dd/yy
If the LDEV was not specified, the following prompt appears:
ENTER THE TAPE LDEV:ldev n
At the completion of the procedure the following prompt is
displayed:
ENTER THE FILE SET TO BE SAVED:
2. If no more files are to be retrieved and saved, return to the
DISCUTIL: prompt by pressing:

Recovering Retrieved Files from Tape to Disk
To exit DISCUTIL and call the volume utility follow the steps below:
1. To exit DISCUTIL, enter:
DISCUTIL:EXIT
This exits DISCUTIL and reboots the system.
2. At the command interpreter prompt (:), enter:
:VOLUTIL
3. At the volutil: prompt, enter:
volutil:RECOVER
4. After the DISCUTIL tape is loaded back to disk, dismount the tape.
Copying Files from DISCUTIL Output Tapes
To copy recovered files from DISCUTIL tapes, enter:
volutil:RECOVER
This form of the command will not overwrite files on the disk that have
the same names as files on the tape. To overwrite files use the NOKEEP
option.
