HP SYSTEM DICTIONARY XL COBOL DEFINITION EXTRACTOR Reference Manual
REDEFINES Clause
SDCDE generates the REDEFINES clause whenever an explicit ELEMENT
redefines ELEMENT relationship exists for the current element, or when
forced by a byte-offset attribute that conflicts with other fields in the
parent element.
Syntax
REDEFINES element-name
Parameters
element-nameName of the element to be redefined
Description
The REDEFINES clause immediately follows the name of the redefining
element.
If the redefining element or group is synchronized, then you should have
the redefined element or group fall on a word boundary. SDCDE does not
do this for you.
You cannot redefine an element or group that already redefines another
element or group. You cannot redefine an element or group that uses the
OCCURS clause.
You cannot use the REDEFINES clause with the OCCURS clause or the VALUE
clause. The REDEFINES clause cannot have any sub-elements specifying the
VALUE clause.
