HP Data Entry and Forms Management System (VPLUS/V)

Chapter 2 ENTERING DATA WITH ENTRY

ENTERING DATA WITH ENTRY

VPLUS/V provides a Data Entry Program (ENTRY) to control all data entered
on forms contained in a VPLUS/V forms file. This section describes how a
user enters data under control of ENTRY. (Refer to Sections 3 and 4 for a
description of forms design; and to Section 6 for a description of the
intrinsics with which ENTRY is implemented and can be modified).

In order to enter data, a user runs ENTRY. Then, with the terminal in
block mode, ENTRY displays forms and the user can enter data into the
unprotected fields displayed on the forms.

Protected and Unprotected Fields

Each form contains "protected fields" that cannot be changed by the user,
and "unprotected fields" into which the user keys data. Protected fields
may be field titles, report headings, or "display only" fields to which
the system sends data. Data entered at a keyboard can only be keyed into
unprotected fields.

Detecting Errors

If errors are detected after data is entered, ENTRY highlights the field
(or fields) in error, and prints a diagnostic message on the line of the
form dedicated to error and status messages. The user can then correct
the errors and reenter the data correctly on the form.

Modifying Data

After data has been entered, the user can review this data and, if
desired, change it. The entered data can be reviewed in any order,
regardless of the order it was entered.

Reformatting Data

If the data is to be reformatted, the user runs REFORMAT. The data will
be reformatted automatically and written to a selected output file from a
selected "batch" file containing the previously entered data.

NOTE If ENTRY is not used or if a modified version is used, special instructions may be required. This section describes how to enter data as if ENTRY were used to control data entry.
