HP ALLBASE/4GL Run-Time Administration Manual

Using this Manual

The rest of this manual is divided into six chapters followed by a
glossary and an index.

Chapters 2 through 6 contain descriptions of the facilities that the HP
ALLBASE/4GL administrator provides. They are presented in the order you
are most likely to follow while setting up your system and finding your
way around the administrator application. They cover the following
topics:

   *   Chapter 2--Getting Started

       This chapter tells you how to sign on to HP ALLBASE/4GL as system
       administrator, how to select and activate menu items, and how to
       enter and edit data on the administrator screens.

   *   Chapter 3--System-Wide Specifications

       This chapter describes the procedures for setting the system-wide
       parameters for HP ALLBASE/4GL. Most of the tasks described in this
       chapter are jobs you only need to do once.

   *   Chapter 4--System Security

       This chapter discusses the procedures for allocating names and
       passwords for end users, and assigning users to applications and
       versions. It also describes the use of application passwords, and
       the HP ALLBASE/4GL menu item security system. Finally it
       describes defining databases and granting database access to
       applications.

   *   Chapter 5--HP ALLBASE/4GL Files

       This chapter provides an outline description of the MPE/iX files,
       groups, and accounts used by HP ALLBASE/4GL.

   *   Chapter 6--Administrator Utilities

       This chapter describes the administrator utilities for printing
       documentation, deleting items, and loading applications.

   *   Chapter 7--Reference

       Chapter 7 is a reference section. It covers every screen in the
       HP ALLBASE/4GL administrator, providing a detailed description of
       its fields. They are presented in the order they appear on the
       administrator application menus.

The descriptions in the early chapters of this manual are not presented
in the same order as they appear on the administrator menus. The order
in this manual is probably the order you will follow while setting up the
system and becoming familiar with the administrator application. The
order of items on the menus is designed to make things as easy as
possible for your routine work.

The following sections describe the various HP ALLBASE/4GL facilities
enabling you to assess the requirements of your site and set the system
up to suit your needs. They are not comprehensive "how-to-do-it" guides.

An important part of setting up your system is assessing the needs of
your site, then planning the best way to accommodate these needs. We
suggest you work through this manual at your terminal. As you work
through the chapters, consider the needs of your site, and use the
administrator facilities to implement an appropriate solution for those
needs. Don't worry if you change your mind, or see a better way at a
later stage, simply go back to the screen in question and make the
changes. Typically, the order you complete the screens in the HP
ALLBASE/4GL administrator is not important.

The glossary defines the meanings of a number of terms. In some cases,
terms used within HP ALLBASE/4GL may have slightly different meanings
than the same terms used in other data processing environments. If you
find a word or term that you haven't seen before, it's probably in the
glossary.
