HP ALLBASE/4GL Run-Time Administration Manual

System Administration Responsibilities

Your responsibilities as the HP ALLBASE/4GL system administrator come
under the following broad headings:

   *   System specifications.

   *   System security.

This manual describes the procedures for carrying out your tasks as the
administrator of an HP ALLBASE/4GL run-time system. As the tasks
required of an MPE/iX system administrator vary from site to site, this
manual does not attempt to describe any procedures outside the HP
ALLBASE/4GL run-time environment. Refer to your MPE/iX manuals for
information on those procedures.

System Specifications

HP ALLBASE/4GL allows centralized definition of some system-wide items.
These centralized definitions ensure consistency across all applications
on the system.

HP ALLBASE/4GL gives you facilities to define system-wide formats for
dates and decimal numbers, the currency symbol, screen display
enhancements, and some aspects of the MPE/iX operating environment.

You will probably need to set most of the system-wide parameters only
once, when you are setting up your HP ALLBASE/4GL system.

System Security

System security means controlling access to the HP ALLBASE/4GL system,
and the applications contained within it. The HP ALLBASE/4GL system
administrator controls all aspects of system security. This includes:

   * Assigning names to end users.

   *   Assigning user passwords.

   * Defining the list of authorized users for applications and
       versions.

   * Defining passwords for applications and versions.

   * Securing (limiting access to) items within application menus.

   *   Assigning database access parameters.

These facilities are additional to the security facilities provided by
MPE/iX.
