All pages May 1992 Preface MPE/iX MPE/iX, Multiprogramming Executive with Integrated POSIX, is the latest in a series of forward-compatible operating systems for the HP 3000 line of computers. In HP documentation and in talking with other HP 3000 users you will encounter references to MPE XL. All programs written for MPE XL will run without change under MPE/iX. You can continue to use MPE XL system documentation, although it may not refer to features added to the operating system to support POSIX (for example, hierarchical directories). Finally, you may encounter references to MPE V, which is the operating system for the HP 3000s not based on the PA-RISC (precision architecture-reduced instruction set computing) architecture. MPE V software can be run on the PA-RISC (Series 900) HP 3000s in what is known as compatibility mode. In This Manual This manual describes the use of the HP ALLBASE/4GL Run-Time Environment on HP 3000 computer systems running under the MPE/iX operating system. It contains information needed by HP ALLBASE/4GL system administrators and describes the features and the use of the HP ALLBASE/4GL administrator application. This manual assumes that you have an MPE/iX system with HP ALLBASE/4GL correctly installed and operating. It also assumes that you have at least one HP ALLBASE/4GL application on the system ready for use. Manual Structure This manual contains 7 chapters, two appendixes, a glossary and an index. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the structure of HP ALLBASE/4GL and the responsibilities of the HP ALLBASE/4GL system administrator. Chapters 2 through 6 introduce the facilities available in the HP ALLBASE/4GL administrator application, and outline some aspects you need to consider in setting up HP ALLBASE/4GL to meet the requirements of your site. These sections also describe the procedures for the administration tasks in the HP ALLBASE/4GL run-time environment. Chapter 7 is a reference section describing the screens and screen fields in the administrator application. Appendix A describes the requirements for establishing HP ALLBASE/SQL databases for HP ALLBASE/4GL applications. Appendix B describes the requirements for establishing HP TurboIMAGE/XL databases for HP ALLBASE/4GL applications. The glossary defines the meaning of some HP ALLBASE/4GL terms.
