Communicating with HP ALLBASE/4GL

The remainder of this chapter describes the use of the terminal keyboard,
but before you look at this in detail, the next few paragraphs provide an
overview of the way HP ALLBASE/4GL uses screens.

HP ALLBASE/4GL Screens

HP ALLBASE/4GL uses two distinctly different types of screens. These are
called menus and data screens.

Menus

Menus allow you to select various options or facilities in HP
ALLBASE/4GL. While HP ALLBASE/4GL is displaying a menu, you can use the
terminal keyboard to select items from the menu, and then request HP
ALLBASE/4GL to execute the selected item. Making HP ALLBASE/4GL execute
a selected menu item is referred to as activating the item.

Data Screens

HP ALLBASE/4GL data screens allow you to enter and edit data. In
general, data screens have at least one data input field. You can use
the terminal keyboard to enter data into the input fields on data
screens, or edit data in these fields. Data screens can also have
display-only fields. These fields display system or application
information. You cannot change the information displayed in these
fields.

Data screens in HP ALLBASE/4GL may use windows. A window is a
supplementary screen that is overlaid on the data screen. The window can
contain further data input or display-only fields.

Data screens may also use a scroll area to display lists of information.
As each new line of information is displayed, the existing lines of
information may be scrolled upwards or downwards on the screen.
