HP ALLBASE/4GL Developer Reference Manual Vol. 1

HP ALLBASE/4GL Files

HP ALLBASE/4GL uses the following types of files:

   *   HP ALLBASE/4GL system files.

   *   Application data files.

   *   Program files.

The following paragraphs contain a brief summary of the various HP
ALLBASE/4GL files and their purpose. Appendix D contains an explanation
of the operating system environment required for these files.

System Files

HP ALLBASE/4GL uses a set of system files referred to as S-files. These
files hold the complete definition of each HP ALLBASE/4GL application.
These files reside in the group and account identified by the MPE/iX
variable HP4SPATH.

Application Data Files

Application data files are the data files (other than HP ALLBASE/SQL
tables and HP TurboIMAGE/iX data sets) referenced by the HP ALLBASE/4GL
application.

Application data files can be KSAM data files or serial data files.
Serial data files can have fixed length records, or variable length
records.

These files may reside in any group and account to which the user has
access rights. When you define a data file you must assign the file a
name for use within HP ALLBASE/4GL and specify the name by which the
operating system knows the file. This external name may use a fully
qualified file name to specify the group and account for the file.

HP ALLBASE/4GL application data files do not need to be restricted to one
group or account. However, as a developer you must have the correct
access permissions to be able to create the data files as required.

Program Files

HP ALLBASE/4GL uses a number of program files enabling you to develop an
application. By default, these program files reside in the PUB.SYS group
and account.
