IBM 2780 Data Transmission Terminal
The IBM 2780 Data Transmission Terminal was IBM's original low cost
remote batch processing terminal and the first data processor to use IBM
Binary Synchronous Communications line protocol (BSC). The IBM 2780 has
the following hardware elements:
* A control unit, a BSC adapter and buffers.
* A card reader capable of reading up to 400 cards per minute.
* A optional card punch capable of punching up to 355 cards per minute.
* An optional line printer capable of printing up to 300 lines per
minute.
The IBM 2780 is capable of the following:
* Transmitting or receiving in ASCII, EBCDIC or six-bit transcode.
* Accepting horizontal tabulation codes, making it possible to process
line printer output more efficiently (optional on the IBM 2780).
* Accepting vertical forms control codes, allowing the formatting of
line printer output.
* Transmitting or receiving data in the transparent mode, making it
possible to transmit or receive binary data (optional on the IBM 2780
and applies only to the EBCDIC mode).
NOTE Transparent mode does not recognize most control characters.
* Truncation of short records, enabling suppression of trailing blanks
from card input, resulting in increased transmission efficiency.
(You must show the start of each trailing blank field by including an
EM control character in the data.)
* Transmitting or receiving blocked data, increasing the transmission
efficiency.
Without blocked data, the maximum number of records allowed per block is
2. Blocked data allows up to seven records per block.

Description: IBM 2780 Data Transmission Terminal.
