Communications Subsystem (CS) Error Codes

RJE/XL uses a set of intrinsics called CS (Communications Subsystem) and
a link driver for communicating with the PSI card. (The RJE/XL version
of CS may be also referred to as RCS.) Both CS and link driver error
messages may occur during the operation of the PSI card (see the
following section for link driver error messages). The format of the CS
error message is as follows:

     **** CS ERROR: x,yyy,zz

x is an integer specifying the type of error, as follows:

 *  0 = Line open error

 *  1 = Line read error

 *  2 = Line write error

yyy is an integer specifying the CS irrecoverable error code, shown in
the following table.

zz is a number specifying the CS recoverable error code returned from the
communications driver (zz is a function of the yyy error code and may not
appear).

NOTE For background information useful in understanding CS errors, refer to appendix C, "Binary Synchronous Communications" in the RJE User/Programmer Manual.
Irrecoverable error codes are divided into the six general categories which are listed in table A-1. Table A-1. Irrecoverable Error Codes --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | Error | General Description | | Codes | | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | 1-40 | The communications software could not open the line, possibly | | | due to incorrect MPE I/O system configuration. | | | | | 41-50 | A CS intrinsics error occurred, perhaps associated with | | | opening the line. Contact your HP representative. | | | | | 51-81 | A CS intrinsics error occurred which did not involve opening | | | the line. Contact your HP representative. | | | | | 84-150 | A hardware error occurred. | | | | | 151-200 | An error or exceptional condition caused the line to be | | | disconnected. | | | | | 201-250 | An error or exceptional condition occurred but the line was | | | not disconnected. | | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An error is "irrecoverable" when the system cannot recover from the error without operator intervention. For RJE/XL, "recoverable" error messages are only displayed after an irrecoverable error has occurred. This only happens with irrecoverable error 207, "transmission retry count was exhausted." In this case, the system has recovered from a failed operation for a preset number of times before the counter was exhausted and an irrecoverable error occurred. The CS error descriptions are listed on the next few pages. (CS ERROR 207 is listed with the specific recoverable errors that can occur. Any that occur frequently should be reported to your Hewlett-Packard representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 MESSAGE CS ERROR 1 CAUSE An internal error was encountered during OPEN. Usually because an internal resource could not be obtained such as creating an object or IOWAIT port, or not getting a system PLABEL etc. ACTION Contact your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7 MESSAGE CS ERROR 7 CAUSE The driver is not installed on the system. ACTION Contact your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10 MESSAGE CS ERROR 10 CAUSE The specified linkname could not be found in the configuration. ACTION Either configure the linkname into the system, or select a linkname which is already configured. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11 MESSAGE CS ERROR 11 CAUSE The INP/PSI associated with this linkname is not available. Possible reasons are the card being in the wrong slot (MPE XL). ACTION Correct the configuration to agree with the cards channel address or physical slot location. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13 MESSAGE CS ERROR 13 CAUSE The specified link device is already in use. ACTION No action required. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15 MESSAGE CS ERROR 15 CAUSE The ROPEN command encountered a buffer manager error while trying to get buffers for read and write requests. ACTION Contact your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19 MESSAGE CS ERROR 19 CAUSE A parameter in the configuration is not supported. ACTION Correct the configuration or use a default. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 26 MESSAGE CS ERROR 26 CAUSE The user must have CS capability. ACTION Alter the user's capabilities. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 31 MESSAGE CS ERROR 31 CAUSE The RJE/XL subsystem could not get enough memory from the system for work space. ACTION Have an HP representative evaluate the memory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 32 MESSAGE CS ERROR 32 CAUSE The PSI was not able to properly open or configure. ACTION Look for error messages from the driver on the system console, and for messages in the system log (LOGxxxx.PUB.SYS). Collect this data and call your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 35 MESSAGE CS ERROR 35 CAUSE The PSI download PSIRJE00.PUB.SYS is either corrupt or missing. ACTION Replace the download with a known good one. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 38 MESSAGE CS ERROR 38 CAUSE The trace manager could not be started when the user invoked trace because of an internal error. ACTION Look for console messages and system log messages. Collect data and contact your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 42 MESSAGE CS ERROR 42 CAUSE An autodial attempt was made while the modem was already busy. ACTION Use an available autodial modem. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 44 MESSAGE CS ERROR 44 CAUSE Power has not been supplied to the autodial modem. ACTION Test modem and connections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 54 MESSAGE CS ERROR 54 CAUSE An error occurred when an autodial attempt was made due to one of the following: An RS366A autodial cable is not installed on the PSI; the remote modem was busy; the remote modem did not answer. ACTION Check to see if the appropriate RS366A autodial cable is attached to the PSI or try another number. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 57 MESSAGE CS ERROR 57 CAUSE The console operator replied with a NO to the dial prompting message displayed on the console possibly because the line was busy or the remote stations is not answering the call. ACTION Try another phone number or retry the operation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 58 MESSAGE CS ERROR 58 CAUSE A dial attempt occurred but no phone list was available. ACTION Update the configuration to include a phone list. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 76 MESSAGE CS ERROR 76 CAUSE No buffer parameter. This is an internal error. ACTION Contact your HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 77 MESSAGE CS ERROR 77 CAUSE The RREAD/RWRITEintrinsics can only handle one read or write at a time. ACTION This is an internal error, please contact your local HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 103 MESSAGE CS ERROR 103 CAUSE Modem DSR signal dropped. Modem failure, or line failure occurred. ACTION Contact HP representative to test modem and line quality. The remote host may have a disconnected line. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 104 MESSAGE CS ERROR 104 CAUSE Modem failure or line failure occurred. Remote dropped modem signals without sending disconnect sequence. ACTION Contact HP representative to test modem and line quality. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 125 MESSAGE CS ERROR 125 CAUSE Modem CTS signal dropped. Modem or line failure occurred. ACTION Contact your HP representative to test modem and line quality. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 126 MESSAGE CS ERROR 126 CAUSE No or wrong cable attached to PSI. ACTION Check cable connections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 151 MESSAGE CS ERROR 151 CAUSE The PSI connect timer expired. This happens when the modem does not raise DSR within connect timeout seconds. Usually because of failure to connect with remote modem or dial facility. It could also be because of a bad local modem or connection. ACTION Check the cable connections, the modems, and the phone number if dialing into a facility. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 155 MESSAGE CS ERROR 155 CAUSE The PSI local timer expired. This happens when RJE/XL does not send requests to the PSI within the specified number of seconds for local timeout. ACTION Retry the command. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 156 MESSAGE CS ERROR 156 CAUSE Irrecoverable internal error detected by the driver.. ACTION Take CS traces of the problem, check for NETDMP## and LOGxxxx.PUB.SYS. Contact your HP representative, an MPE XL system dump may be necessary. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 158 MESSAGE CS ERROR 158 CAUSE The remote station sent a DLE EOT disconnect sequence to inform us that it is disconnecting. ACTION An RJCONTINUE procedure can used to recover from this situation. If protocol problems with the remote or INP are indicated, contact your HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 162 MESSAGE CS ERROR 162 CAUSE The PSI's heartbeat timeout has occurred. This happens if the HP 3000 does communicate with the PSI card within a certain amount of time. ACTION Contact your HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 204 MESSAGE CS ERROR 204 CAUSE The remote station sent a NAK sequence in response to a linebid. This happens when remote does not recognize the local ID sequence. ACTION Try another ID sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 205 MESSAGE CS ERROR 205 CAUSE The remote primary station bid for the line at the same time the local bid for the line; line bid failed. ACTION Since the remote is primary, the local user should issue an RJOUT to receive the remote station's data. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 206 MESSAGE CS ERROR 206 CAUSE While the local was sending data, the remote sent an RVI indicating that it had an urgent message to send. ACTION The current user should issue an RJOUT command to receive the remote station's message. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,1 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,1 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. The remote station either sent an ID while bidding for the line or while acknowledging a BID, which is not in the local stations list of valid remote IDs. ACTION The user should update the remote ID list or should try connecting to a link with a known ID. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,2 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,2 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. An unintelligible sequence was received from remote. This is normally caused by a noisy line. ACTION Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,3 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,3 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. Block check character error. This is normally caused by a noisy line. A text block sequence sent by the remote station was garbled on the line and the local station responded with a NAK for the specified number of retries before giving up. ACTION Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,4 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,4 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. Remote did not respond to text. The local station times out and sends an ENQ requesting a response from remote. If this happens retry times, the local will give up and report this error. ACTION Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,7 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,7 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. Remote did not respond to linebid. If level one connection is established and the remote is not responding to local's bid, this usually means the remote is not seeing the linebid possibly because of a bad cable connection. ACTION Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. Check all cable connections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,10 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,10 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. The remote sent an ENQ to request a retransmission of the local's last response. ACTION Take a CS trace of the problem. Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. Check all cable connections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 207,11 MESSAGE CS ERROR 207,11 CAUSE Transmission retry count was exhausted. The text sent by the local station was garbled during transmission and the remote station requested a resend. ACTION Contact your local HP representative to test the quality of the line and modems. Check all cable connections. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 209 MESSAGE CS ERROR 209 CAUSE The text block timer (PSI) expired while waiting for text from the remote station. This usually means the remote system could not respond in time, or the system is no longer communicating with your system. ACTION You can use an #RJCONTINUE procedure to recover from this situation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 210 MESSAGE CS ERROR 210 CAUSE Remote sent unexpected EOT; probably due to an irrecoverable error. ACTION An RJCOUNTINUE procedure can be used to recover from this situation. If protocol problems with the remote host or INP are indicated, contact your HP representative. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 217 MESSAGE CS ERROR 217 CAUSE No line bid was received from remote stations; local station timed out. ACTION You can use an #RJCONTINUE procedure to recover from this situation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
