Product Information

TELNET/iX Client functionality has been added to the MPE/iX Fundamental
Operating System (FOS). The TELNET/iX Client is made up of a single
program file with a few supporting files.

TELNET is an industry standard protocol for end-user access into UNIX and
other vendors' proprietary systems. MPE/iX's TELNET/iX Client handles
connections going from the HP 3000 system to an HP 9000 or non-HP system
supporting TELNET and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol). The TELNET/iX Client is similar in functionality to the
TELNET Client software on HP-UX version 9.0 and is compliant with Request
For Comment (RFC) 1123. The TELNET/iX Client program will support the
following TELNET commands: Help, Close, Display, Mode, Open, Quit, Send,
Set, Status, Toggle, z, !, and ?.

The TELNET/iX Client is dependent on one of the supported link products
being operational. The TELNET/iX Client can utilize any one of the
MPE/iX Link products supported by TCP/IP, e.g., LAN/3000, Token Ring,
X.25, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface). Of course, the Link
itself needs to be configured properly, and up and running for the
TELNET/iX Client to allow connection establishment.

For TELNET connections going into an HP 3000 system, use the
TELNET Access solution comprising a TELNET Access Card (TAC) in a
Datacommunications and Terminal Controller (DTC). Together, the TELNET/iX
Client and TELNET Access solutions achieve more complete interoperability
in an open systems environment.

Limitations of TELNET/iX Client

The TELNET/iX Client is only supported on MPE/iX General Release 5.0
(C.50.00). The TELNET/iX Client program may be issued from a regular
MPE/iX session or from within a program. It may NOT, however, be issued
from a batch job or with the use of input/output redirection.

NOTE The TELNET/iX Client is NOT supported when access to the MPE/iX session is from a PC using VT (Virtual Terminal) or from an MPE/V system using VT.
For information on how to use the product please see the HP TELNET/iX Client User's Guide (36957-90152).
