by Mike Paivinen
Commercial Systems Division
This is a guide to the POSIX articles in this Communicator. The articles
are grouped under different headings to help you quickly see which
articles may be of interest to you.
If You Are New to POSIX and the HFS
Read "The Hierarchical File System" and "MPE/iX File Access and Security
Enhancements" for an overview of the MPE/iX extensions that were added to
support POSIX, including the Hierarchical File System (HFS). If you want
to know what changes have been made to the standard MPE/iX intrinsics and
commands, read "MPE/iX New and Enhanced Intrinsics" and "New CI
Commands". For information on a computer-based training program for
POSIX read "POSIX Computer-Based Training".
For POSIX or POSIX-Related Application Developers
POSIX or POSIX-related application developers must recompile and relink
their applications on MPE/iX General Release 5.0. Refer to the technical
article, "MPE/iX Shared Globals Technical Overview", for more
information.
For the System Manager
The article, "Managing a 5.0 POSIX HP 3000 System", describes how the new
POSIX environment on MPE/iX affects the HP 3000 system manager. Other
articles of interest to the system manager concerned about POSIX are
"POSIX Computer-Based Training", "The UID/GID Databases Enhanced",
"TurboSTORE/iX Changes", "Creating Pre-POSIX Compatible Tapes", and
"System Logging Changes". POSIX disk space requirements are discussed in
the article, "MPE/iX Release 5.0 Disk Space Requirements".
For the Open Systems Programmer
The POSIX.1 interfaces and POSIX.2 commands and utilities are highlighted
in the articles, "General POSIX Release Shipping with MPE/iX 5.0",
"Introducing the MPE/iX Shell and Utilities", and "MPE/iX Developer's
Kit: New Functionality". Other open systems interfaces are discussed in
the articles, "Curses Library Now Available on MPE/iX", "System V
Interprocess Communication", "HP Motif/iX(TM) Enhancements", and "HP
Symbolic Debugger (xdb) Enhancements".
New File Types
Several new file types have been added since MPE/iX Release 4.0. A
summary of the new file types can be found in the article, "The
Hierarchical File System". Additional details on several of these file
types can be found in "Symbolic Links on MPE/iX", "Enhancements to
Support Special and Device Files", and "Byte-Stream Emulation".
4.5 Restrictions Removed
Read the two articles, "Files and Directories Under MPE/iX Accounts" and
"Loading Programs and XLs from HFS", for information on restrictions
removed.
Incompatibilities Between 4.5 and 5.0
The incompatibilities between 4.5 and 5.0 are highlighted throughout
several articles. Section 1 of this Communicator, "MPE/iX Release 5.0
(C.50.00) Overview", describes the major differences.
Networking Limitations
Read the article, "NS/3000 and POSIX File Limitations", for a brief
summary of networking limitations with POSIX or HFS filenames.
