HP7933s and HP7935s as LDEV1

The disk space requirements for MPE/iX Release 5.0 prevent the use of the
HP7933 and HP7935 disk drives as LDEV1 (the system disk). If you are
using a HP7933 or HP7935 as LDEV1 on your system, you must take some
additional steps prior to updating your system to MPE/iX 5.0.

You will need to arrange to replace your HP7933 or HP7935 (LDEV1) with a
supported disk drive which has a capacity of at least 500 megabytes.
Contact your local Hewlett-Packard office to schedule a CE visit to
install your replacement disk drive.

Whenever LDEV1 is replaced on a system, you will need to recover the
software on your system. You will need a current and complete set of
backup tapes containing all files residing on the system volume set.
Please refer to the HP 3000 MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-on
Manual (36213-90001) for the list of "Materials Needed for a Reinstall."

Once you have all the materials needed for a reinstall, the CE can
install your replacement disk drive as LDEV1. After the replacement disk
drive has been configured as LDEV1, you can then rebuild your system
volume set and update to MPE/iX 5.0.

You have two methods for rebuilding your system and updating to MPE/iX
5.0. Either can be used to successfully update your system to MPE/iX
5.0.

   * Method 1: First, reinstall the version of software you currently
have on your system. To do this, follow the instructions for
"Reinstalling your System" which are provided in the HP 3000
       MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-on Manual (36213-90001).
After you have restored your system volume set, you may then begin
       the MPE/iX 5.0 Update Process.

   * Method 2: The second method for rebuilding your system and
updating it to MPE/iX 5.0 can save you time; however, issuing any
RESTORE commands without the KEEP option will result in a mismatch
of two different operating system versions. In the event that
this happens, customers may observe unexpected results when using
       the system.

If you choose the second method, you can install MPE/iX 5.0 on the
system after a supported disk drive has been installed as LDEV1.
Once this is completed, you will need to restore the user data
which had previously resided on the system volume set. To do
this, refer to the section entitled "To complete the install"
(Reinstalling your system) in the HP 3000 MPE/iX Installation,
       Update and Add-on Manual (36213-90001).

Which method should you use? Method one is the safest method for
successfully replacing LDEV1 with a supported disk and then updating the
system. Method two essentially enables you to perform two steps in one.
If you are not comfortable with the update or installation process, then
it is recommended that you use method one.
