COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE/iX Release 5.0 (Core Software Release X.50.20)

System Limits Improved

by Alex Trujillo
Commercial Systems Division

Scarce resources, such as the number of devices and processes, have
limited customer logon capabilities for several MPE/iX releases. In
MPE/iX Release 5.0, these scarce resources have increased significantly
and improve logon connectivity for high-end MPE/iX customers.

More Processes

The number of available processes has been increased from 5460 to 8190.
Depending on your system configuration, customers previously affected by
process limits now have an adequate supply of processes for their
applications.

With this increase, you now have an adequate supply of processes for your
applications and will no longer be affected by process limits. As in the
past, the number of processes available still depends on your system's
configuration.

More Devices

Secondly, the maximum number of configurable devices has been increased
from 2330 to 4679. This means that you can configure up to 4679 devices
(disks, tapes, printers, terminals, and pseudo terminals). The maximum
SYSGEN configurable LDEV number is 4679. Please note that the number of
devices on the system is different from the number of sessions than can
log on to MPE.

In addition, the output for SHOWIN and SHOWOUT has been modified to
reflect these device increases. For details on these changes, please
refer to the article "SHOWIN and SHOWOUT Changes" in the "Technical
Articles" chapter in this Communicator .

More Logons

MPE/iX can now utilize high-end processor power more effectively.
Depending on your application environment, the increase in devices and
processes allows MPE to support 2700 active logons (no more than 1250 non
local logons, particularly Virtual Terminal (VT) sessions). Your system
logon limit varies depending on application resource usage (processes,
data segments, devices, and so on). For more on logon capacity, please
refer to the article "A Detailed Look At System Limits" in the "Technical
Articles" chapter in this Communicator.
