NOTE The B3604A HP Open DeskManager C.00.00 and the B3605A HP Open DeskManagerPLUS C.00.00 replace: 36570A HP DeskManager for MPE/XL 36567A HP DeskManagerPLUS for MPE/XL
This release of HP Open DeskManager and HP Open DeskManagerPLUS (for HP 3000 MPE/iX systems) is the next generation of HP DeskManager. Although significant enhancements have been made, it remains highly compatible with earlier versions of the product. There have been no modifications to the database from HP DeskManager B.05 to HP Open DeskManager C.00.00. HP Open DeskManager will only be available for MPE/iX customers. HP DeskManager will remain available for MPE/V customers. HP Open DeskManager Product Overview. The B3604A HP Open DeskManager C.00.00 and the B3605A HP Open DeskManagerPLUS C.00.00 provide the following new features: * Clients of Choice: * Microsoft Mail Support (MS Mail) * Lotus cc:Mail Support (cc:Mail) * Word-wrap Text Editor (HP DeskNote) * Partial Native Mode Port/Improved Scalability * Autoprint * UI Enhancements * Response Time Logging * Mailutil Store/Restore Enhancements Clients of Choice. Through the User Agent Layer (UAL), a host component, HP Open DeskManager systems can be accessed by personal computers using industry standard Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail client software as follows: * Lotus cc:Mail for Windows, version 1.12 and HP driver A.01.02.00 * Microsoft Mail for Windows, version 3.2 and HP driver A.01.02.01 * HP Clients: * AdvanceMail/PC A.04.02 * NewWaveMail A.04.00 Third-party clients are not supported by Hewlett-Packard. However, the UAL and driver component are supported through normal HP support channels. With every copy of HP Open DeskManager and HP Open DeskManagerPLUS ordered, the customer will receive a Clients of Choice box. This will contain the HP clients, and the HP drivers for Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail. An evaluation copy and a single user license for the Lotus cc:Mail client and Microsoft Mail client are also included. With this release the client software will be provided on 3.5-inch disks. The clients are configured in MAILCONFIG in the same way as any other HP OpenDesk user. Enabling PC Clients. The PCMAILON command has to be issued to enable mailing with Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients. Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients also use a special "shadow" directory for performing name searches. The shadow directory is built automatically from the HP Open DeskManager databases as part of the PCMAILON operator command. The following UDCs are available. * PCMAILON Starts the monitor processes for PC mailing products such as Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail, AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail. This command also rebuilds the shadow directory. * PCMAILOFF Stops the monitor processes for PC mailing products. * MAILBUILDDIR allows rebuilding of the "shadow" directory used by Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients at any time. The interface within OpenDesk used by Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients is the UAL (User Application Layer), and its monitor process is called the UAL monitor. The UAL monitor sessions are created with the initial logon identifier: DUALSRVR,ADVMAIL.HPOFFICE While PC mailing is enabled there is always one session per active client, plus two further sessions awaiting signon requests (one DUALSRVR and one ADVMAIL). When a user signs on to Lotus cc:Mail or Microsoft Mail the logon identifier is changed to indicate the users name, and another DUALSRVR is created. OpenDesk UAL Configuration File. This configuration file is provided to let you set parameters that control the running of all client sessions connected to OpenDesk via the UAL, and also of the monitor component. The system administrator can modify this file. The file is located in UALCONFG.MAILCONF.HPOFFICE. The file is a modifiable text file containing one parameter per record where each parameter consists of a token and a value pair, separated by a colon(:) or equal sign(=). Details of these parameters can be found in Chapter 13 of the HP Open DeskManager Administration Manual (B3606-90001). HP DeskNote A.00.00. The HP Open DeskManager terminal interface features a word-wrap text editor, called HP DeskNote. This is used for creating and editing messages and text items. You can select HP DeskNote by using the PROFILE command. Alternatively, the administrator can tailor the standard Profile to give all users of the system that User Profile. Additionally, a user's local group can be modified to include options that have not been configured globally. This can be done by copying the HPWRINI.PUB.HPOFFICE file to a user's local group and modifying the file to include a user's preferred options. Partial Native Mode Port/Improved Scalability. The HP Open DeskManager terminal interface and segmented library have been ported to native mode, giving improved performance for the terminal user. However, there are parts that run in compatibility mode. Still, it is possible to improve performance of some components by creating an OCT version of these parts. Detailed instructions describing how to OCT these components are in the following file: OCTINSTL.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE You can get further information about OCT by browsing this file, or by outputting this file to a system printer. Additional Features. AUTOPRINT Users. The terminal interface for HP Open DeskManager supports two new automatic print options: * AUTOPRINT capability is for users who are "hard-copy" users of electronic mail, for whom all incoming messages are printed automatically for distribution in hard-copy form. Incoming messages are deleted once they have been printed. AUTOPRINT users are not expected to send messages or reply to messages. * SUPERPRINT capability is for users who want to have their messages printed automatically, but who also retain the ability to send messages using the HP Open DeskManager interface. Users can be configured as AUTOPRINT or SUPERPRINT users from within MAILCONFIG, by changing the second user information screen. Display Enhancements. An alternative display format, which is applicable to the HP Open DeskManager terminal user interface only, has been provided. This display format allows suppression of some of the information displayed when reading and printing messages: * Message part numbers are suppressed. * Repetition in the display of message distribution lists is eliminated. * A clear distinction is made when a message is sent on behalf of someone else (that is, when the sender name and FROM: name of a message are different). The improved format is selected by setting the ALTERDISPLAY Job Control Word (JCW). This can be done by editing the OPENDESK and HPDESK UDCs. The ALTERDISPLAY JCW will accept these values: 0 Messages are both displayed and printed in the standard format. 1 Messages are displayed to the user's screen in the improved format, but will be printed in the standard format. 2 Messages are displayed to the user's screen using the standard format, but will be printed in the improved format. 3 Messages are both displayed and printed in improved format. For example, to display and print messages in the improved format, add the following line to the OPENDESK (and HPDESK) UDCs: SETJCW ALTERDISPLAY 3 Terminal Interface Response Time Logging. This feature provides a log file of transactions for the HP Open DeskManager terminal interface. Response times can be analyzed from data recorded to a log file (UILOG.MAILDB) when the JCW HPDESKUILOGGING is set. Enhanced "People Moving" Capabilities. The MAILUTIL program has been enhanced so that the contents of a user's In Tray, Out Tray, and Pending Tray are now transferred as well as the List Area, Filing Cabinet and Diary when a user is moved from one machine to another. Note that Storing and Restoring users in this way does not save the contents of their AUTOANSWER and AUTOFORWARD items, or their native names. Their AUTOFILE, AUTOCOPY, AUTOPRINT and AUTOINSERT settings will also be reset. This Store/Restore of the In Tray, Out Tray and Pending Tray can be suppressed by setting JCW HPEXTENDMAILUTIL.
NOTE In addition to the above features HP Open DeskManager C.00.00 retains all the functionality available with HP DeskManager B.05.00
HP Open DeskManagerPLUS Product Overview. The B3605A HP Open DeskManagerPLUS C.00.00 includes the following dependent products and features of HP DeskManagerPLUS B.05.00: * HPDesk Intrinsics * HP DeskMon * HP Schedule * DCA FFT & RFT Converters * NS Transport Data Compression * Routing and Authorization * High Availability/Garbage Collection * Enhanced Centralized Administration HP Open DeskManagerPLUS New Features. Updating Distribution Lists Automatically. A new server has been added that allows distribution lists to be updated remotely throughout a network. Updating distribution lists is carried out in a similar way to making directory updates using *ADMIN. This can be done after mail nodes have been consolidated, or after users change their name or mail node. The server will update: * Distribution Lists in each user's personal List Area (for users of Lotus cc:Mail and of the OpenDesk terminal interface only). _________________________________________________________________ NOTE Distribution lists cannot be updated for Microsoft Mail, NewWave Mail and AdvanceMail. _________________________________________________________________ * Public Distribution Lists (this applies to distribution lists in the "Public Distribution Lists" folder of the OpenDesk Filing Cabinet and, applies to users of the OpenDesk terminal interface only). HP Spell Integration. HP Spell software is supplied as standard to enable spell checking in the terminal interface and within the HP DeskNote text editor. HP Spell has American-English and British-English dictionaries available. This product is only supplied with HP Open DeskManagerPLUS. Upgrading to HP Open DeskManager Version C.00.00 The installation process for HP Open DeskManager and HP Open DeskManagerPLUS is the same as for the HP DeskManager products. No database changes have been incorporated in OpenDesk, so no conversion is necessary when upgrading from HP DeskManager version B.05. In addition, the Native Mode version of the user interface simply replaces the previous version. After installing HP Open DeskManager: * If Lotus cc:Mail or Microsoft Mail clients are to be used with HP Open DeskManager, a manual adjustment to a configuration file will be necessary. The entry called DEFAULT_X400_MAILNODE in the file UALCONFG.MAILCONF.HPOFFICE must be altered to identify a configured mail node in a quoted string. If the OpenDesk system is not connected to an X.400 network then this mail node can (though need not) be any mail node local to the system. If the OpenDesk system is connected to an X.400 network via a gateway, then this mail node should be routed to that gateway. The purpose of this configuration is to ensure that any messages created by these clients with X.400 addresses will be routed to the correct location in the OpenDesk network. * If the HP DeskNote text editor is to be used, a manual adjustment may be required to the HP DeskNote global configuration file HPWRINI.PUB.HPOFFICE. By default, spell checking is disabled for the HP DeskNote editor. Spell-checking should be enabled if HP Spell is installed on your system (or if you are using HP Open DeskManagerPLUS--HP Spell is standard on HP Open DeskManagerPLUS systems). * For American language spell checking, add options: SPELLCHECKER = 1 USERDICTIONARY = AMSPELL * For British language spell checking, add options: SPELLCHECKER = 2 USERDICTIONARY = BRSPELL * The default configuration file for HP DeskNote uses binary mode datacom for terminal connections. To use field mode datacom (available with MPE/iX 4.5 onwards), use the option: DATACOM = 1 Field mode datacom has some performance advantages over binary mode datacom. _________________________________________________________________ NOTE To use field mode terminal connections over DS lines, remember that all HP 3000's in the chain must support field mode datacom (i.e., must be MPE/iX version 4.5 or later). _________________________________________________________________ Refer to Appendix A in the HP Open DeskManager User Reference Guide (B3606-90003) for detailed information about the HP DeskNote configuration file. * The Garbage Collector process (if required) needs to be re-enabled. A screen in MAILCONFIG is provided for this under the System Menu. You should identify the periods of time during the day that the program is to be active and when it should be paused. This screen also allows a major part of MAILMAINT's activity to be skipped (since this is unnecessary when running the new facilities). The time taken to run MAILMAINT--even on a weekly basis--will be markedly reduced. Note that several files will be overwritten when OpenDesk is installed, as follows: * All files in MAILJOB.HPOFFICE are replaced. As a result any adjustments made to the maintenance and backup jobs to use a different tape device, or the switching out of a store in the MAILMAINT job must be made again to the relevant job files. Any changes made to the MAILMNT2 and CHNGLOG jobs to alter the size of the AUDITFIL and STATSFIL log files must also be reapplied. * Certain files in the group MAILCONF and MAILHELP.HPOFFICE will be overwritten, but backup copies of the existing files will be automatically taken first during the installation. Any changes or customization of these files that you wish to retain must also be reapplied. Compatibility with Previous Versions HP Open DeskManager version C.00.00 is fully compatible with HP DeskManager version B.05. Note that some capabilities available via the OpenDesk terminal user interface and AdvanceMail and NewWave Mail will not be available to the Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients, as follows: * Designate support * Initiation and actioning of routed messages (though a means will exist to process these automatically on behalf of the client user) * Access to the OpenDesk diary * Access to the Notice Board and Public distribution lists * Access to more than one level of folders below the filing cabinet (Lotus cc:Mail) * Ability to share folders with other users (however the user will still be able to access folders that have already been shared with him) (Lotus cc:Mail) * Passworded folders * Access to the Admin area (including the Autoforward and Autoreply capabilities) * Access to the Applications area * Ability to defer mailing of messages * Selective download of messages to intray (Microsoft Mail) * Password expiry and composition rules The following features of cc:Mail for Windows (version 1.12) cannot be used when connecting to OpenDesk: * Archive Files * Bulletin Boards * Color Highlighting in Messages * The Notify Program * Public Mailing Lists * Searching for Words in Messages * You cannot display the Forwarding Information dialog box. Instead, each previous address list is displayed as a Forwarding List item within the message. The only feature of Microsoft Mail for Windows (Version 3.2) which cannot be used when connecting to OpenDesk is: * Schedule+ HP File/Library In the B3614 HP File/Library version C.00.00 release, the user interface has been ported to native mode. The product number has changed to differentiate what is compatible with MPE/iX and MPE/V operating systems.
